anyone ever file divorce w/out atty?

YEAH...my brother did. DIDNT work out good for him...
They agreed on terms and WHEN he showed up to court SHE had a lawyer...took him to the cleaners!!!!!!!!!

yeah what Dom says is true.

women are always changing their minds. we are known for that.

to be safe I would at least get some legal advice

good luck

I filed without an attorney, since my ex and I had already agreed upon everything. I bought the book on filing for divorce in Michigan and it gave me step by step instructions along with copies of the forms I needed. It worked out fine for me. :)

Hope you get it all straightened out and have some closure soon.

Guys, Sean's wife and him split on the up and up, this is not a line of BS. He is giving her, her fair share and she knows that. With a lawyer she will not gain anything.

He's just looking for the proper process, he didn't ask for your legal advice.<sigh>

LOL, its not like that, we just hate to see ANOTHER man get taken to the cleaners. It stirs up some primal feelings when the woman takes advantage of divorces.

motorcitymustang ,we just wish the best for you thats all. :33:

While I'm not going to deny that there are plenty of women who do this (my soon to be ex-aunt is doing this to my uncle right now and I'd like very much to see all of the Botox she's having done backfire and see her become the Elephant Woman), I must say that some women get taken advantage of and get the short end of the stick in divorces too.

I'm one of them. My divorce 2 years ago left me holding the $15,000 in credit card debt we had accrued together (and was mostly his doing with all of his DJ and gadget must-haves). I was screwed because he had convinced me a year before, with "his word as a man" that we should do an interest-only mortgage to pull out equity and pay of that credit card (I didn't want an interest only loan), and in a years time, we'd refinance into a standard mortgage, blah blah blah. I compromised and agreed despite my better judgment. Almost one year TO THE DAY he moved out and left me holding that mortgage. I now realize he probably plotted that all along.

Could I have gone after him for the money? Absolutely. Would I have gotten it? It would have been painful. We are talking about someone who lives beyond their means, and here it is two years later, and just a couple of weeks ago I was getting calls from his creditors on his car loan because it was unpaid (I am not on the loan, they just had my phone #, which they have since taken off.) So the prospect of me having to call him up and argue with him every month to get a payment, and then HOPE his check didn't bounce, was enough to make me just deal with paying the debt off myself. This is, after all, the emotional manipulator who convinced me we were working on reconciling (and still sleeping together unprotected because he SWORE he was faithful to me) and at the same time sleeping with at least three other women but DEMANDING fidelity from me. Oh, did I mention he only used protection with one of those women? Yeah. Thus exposing me to whatever crotch rot that they might have had. Thankfully, all of the tests came back clean, but what a douchequake he was.

So. It works both ways. Sometimes women get fucked over too.

I'm just sayin'. :)

Hmmm......maybe I'll look that up! thx!

No douchebag here. :) Most say I was being WAY too good to her in the settlement.

Well if you have both been able to agree to do this without attorneys it's pretty obviously there is no douchebaggery going on. ;) And I'm sure you are being generous, you don't sound bitter or anything, just wanting some closure.

Here is one of the books: http://www.amazon.com/How-File-Divorce-Michigan-Self-Help/dp/1570714096

But I know if you go to a Borders, B&N, or other bookstore they should have it on the shelf or be able to order a copy for you. I hope it helps! It was really easy to follow, but mine was an earlier edition obviously. Mine had a kind of old-comic-book type cover with a distraught looking couple on it, so that might be a good reference image to look for if they still make the one I used. Good luck! :)

Thanks Trase! Very much appreciated!

The ex and I both are definitely just looking to close things finally. I have a girlfriend of over a year and a half that's been MORE than patient. She has a Borders w/in walking distance at work. I'd bet she wouldn't mind looking for this tomorrow. LOL

No problem, having been there I just hope my experience might help others some. If you get the book and have any questions I can try to help answer them, just PM me. Even though I went through this two years ago, George just went through it this year and so the steps are still fairly clear in my mind, although they were different for him because of his son (the ex and I had no kids). Even with that, kids just entail additional steps on top of the ones you already need.

I hope it all goes smoothly and quickly! :)

Where located GeosRide? :)

I'm gonna stop today as I found a 2007 ed. of a similar book at the local library doing a search last night. If that doesn't cover what I need I'll be looking to pick up Trase's suggested title.

"The Michigan Divorce Book - A guide to doing an uncontested divorce without an attorney - with minor children" by Michael Maran - Michigan Atty. Seventh Edition. March 2007.

ISBN-13: 978-0-936343-19-8
ISBN-10: 0-936343-19-2

$34.95 but I found it at my public library. There's one for "without minor children" for $28.95 but the library didn't have that one. I can just skip over the FOC stuff. This one has forms in the back for copying. Pretty informative in just the 15 minutes I've gone through it. Already found some doc's we signed out of order that will have to be signed and nortarized again and I had her served incorrectly so we'll have to do that again. Found most of the order for filing so far (haven't been through that section fully yet). I'll post up what I find as I get to each point. I spoke w/ the ex this afternoon re: what we'll have to fix and she's just waiting for me to tell her what she needs to redo.

Tip: When serving by certified mail someone other than you has to send the doc's. i.e. the return receipt card has to be someone else's name and address. I got mis-information on that initially and thought by mail got around the fact that you can't serve the other party yourself.

Thanks everybody!

Found out they have the "without minor children" as reference only at my library. Seems it used to be in regular circ but it came back thinner each time (forms in back). LOL Enough of a difference it's worth reading that one. Gonna go back and make some copies. Updates to follow...
