Anyone ever adopt a dog from a rescue?

Sara & I filled out an online application over the weekend, & haven't heard anything yet. I didn't know how long it takes. The dog isn't ready to be adopted yet, I think he's still got a couple weeks yet.
Our boxer now is getting older, & we'd like to get a second one, figured it might help keep her young. The suspense is killing us lol. We're not getting our hopes up, we realize we're probably not the only people who applied to adopt him.

Best of luck John! I have never done that but Stika pimp has and I believe his daughter works at a rescue place. Keith at Ice Nine has adopted also so you may want to contact them

Which rescue are you working with? I used to be a foster for Boxer Haven.
It's normal for things to take a little time. While we want every dog to go to a loving forever there is some due diligence that has to be done..

I adopted a dog from serenity around December. Filled it out and they called a couple days later. after interviewing me and spending time with the pup they called my vet and asked normal stuff to make sure you take care of the animals.
I did it for the same reason. My old one is 13. Much more active now but sleeps a lot. Pretty much got the second for the old pup and me. I'll be lost when the time comes

Thanks for the replies everyone. Great lakes boxer rescue is the place. They asked for our vet's info, what brand food we feed our pets, etc. We've been talking about getting a second boxer for a while, and figured now is a good time. Hopefully we hear back soon.

Our 3 year old male was a rescue, albeit sort of different. Friend of a friend found him being neglected and convinced the owner to give him up. He is very handsome, not very bright and about the sweetest dog I have ever known

Ours had a problem with one of her eyes, she got an ulcer on it, vet said its a common problem. They did an operation for it, and it didn't take, so now she has a zombie eye. Other than that she's been great.

Good looking dog.

Any downfalls with the breed? I know most people say they are very active

In a nutshell they are basically lifelong puppies, always ready to play until they plop over exhausted. They are extremely affectionate, and need attention and play time to be content. While they have what some perceive to be an intimidating appearance, most owners would agree they are the very epitome of "all bark and no bite"

They do have an elevated risk of cancer compared with other dogs and ACL tears can be a problem. Also, because of their short snout and underbite, they have nose wrinkles/folds and you should keep an eye on them and make sure they remain clean (wipe them out occasionally) to avoid infection.

On the topic of rescues, be careful. We tried to get a dog from a rescue in May from the " Meet your best friend at the zoo" event. Long story short we ended up waiting weeks playing games with them only for them to adopt the dog to another family, with a bullshit excuse behind it. The other rescue I went to, went 100% smooth and I would recommend them all day, so just do your homework, google the adoption agency if it's not somewhere well known like the Michigan Humane Society. Just my $.02

Both our dogs are adopted from rescue's. Just takes time for the paperwork. But most will at least let you know they are working on it. If you have not heard anything I would at least contact them to verify they have the info and are in process with it.

Good luck!
It took me two months to adopt my Greyhound at the beginning of this year.
Well worth it though.
That is great! We have 2 greyhounds as well. Both turned 9 this year.

Sara just called me, I guess the guy we were interested in is going to a family in a week or so. They said if something falls through they would let us know. I didn't have my hopes up, but I'm still bummed out. At least they called & didn't leave us hanging. And now they have our info on file.

how bout a great dane? LOL My wife works for all about animals in warren and has connections with all rescues in the area except DDR.

Why not DDR?
I'm guessing it's because they have taken in something like $3,000,000 in donations over the past 3 years under the guise of buying/building a shelter...and they have nothing to show for it. They have also knowingly adopted out dogs with bite histories without disclosing it and don't (or didn't) spay/neuter the dogs they put out for adoption... thus exacerbating the problem they claim to be fighting (too many dogs and not enough homes)
