Picked up a pretty cool Pioneer sx-1050 receiver! this thing is a beast.. It lights up but I havent hooked any speakers to it. Other than the fact they go for decent money I really know nothing about old(or newer) stereos.. looks to be mid 70's?

Its mid-70s alright, and the 2nd from their top of the line during that era, only bested by the SX-1250. Heres some specs for you.

MSRP in 1976: $600 (~$2200 in todays money)
Weight: 51.5lb
Power: 120W at 8 ohms and 170W at 4 ohms

Go pick your favorite 120W modern receiver, and tell me which one kicks you in the balls harder

thanks! this seems too nice to use in my garage..

Keep it and use it. Get an adapter and hook up an iPod or whatever. It probably sounds better than anything youve ever heard

Im gonna guess somebody gave it to him. The value on these can be hard to judge. Generally, a fully restored (recapped, new lamps, new transistors, deoxidized) unit with near flawless cosmetics can fetch ~$600 (going by recent eBay sales). An original condition unit, with great cosmetics would probably be $300 to $400 or so. A beater, being that it mostly works, but has cosmetic flaws, figure $100 to $200.

The best part about those old receivers, they measured THD differently then than they do now. Back then, THD was measured at full power output. Most of your big box store items these days measure THD at 1W...sometimes 10W, with a 1KHz input signal. The good modern manufacturers, like Marantz, Cambridge Audio, NAD, Arcam, Bryston, Krell, Creek, etc still measure THD at full tilt. In a nutshell, 0.1% THD at full power output sounds alot better than 0.1% at 1W. If the first watt sucks, why add more to it? FWIW, that SX-1050 is 0.1% THD at 120W . Your speakers will distort way before the amp does.

no luck. hooked speakers to it but no sound. all of the lights come on, it shows "stereo" and is getting good reception. maybe i'll just throw it on craigslist later.

i did not get it free, i had to shell out $6 at the thrift store!

Itll show "stereo" when you receive a good FM signal. Have you checked the switches to make sure the speakers are enabled? People would generally turn them off for use with headphones.

EDIT:

There are 3 speaker selector buttons on the front; A, B, and C.
