Any forums on '77-'90 GM B-bodies?

I've been looking all over the place, can't find anything, and it's driving me nuts. I'm trying to figure out some things about this damned Impala and there doesn't seem to be any help around, which shocks me considering how popular these things still seem to be.

Anyone?

which was started by one of the regulars on the yahoogroup. FYI, I am abbynrml94 in the yahoogroup, and I think beertestr on the forum.

If you are looking for b-body info, MISSL.org is a local b-body club, but is centered around the 94-96 Impala SS, but many members have 91-96 B and D bodies.

I have been messing with b-bodies for about 8 years now  so if you have any questions, fire away. There are a few others on here that know quite a bit about them.. and are parts whores... I mean Hoard parts... I won't name Chucks name.. but... :)

My list of b-bodies, I am down to 1+parts.
94 9c1 (cop car) LT1
95 Impala SS LT1
89 Caprice L03 305 TBI
91 Caprice 305 TBI
94 MI state police car LT1
94 1A2 (special service) Wagon
94 parts car#1
77 Impala Coupe
95 Caprice 9C1- current project-Aluminum head LT1/T56, 3.73, Baer brakes, seam welded frame, boxed rear control arms, Energy suspension, Eibach springs, Bilstein HD shocks, Hotchkis swaybars.. with an 07 L98 (think 6.0L LS3) on the engine stand..

Thanks! I'll have to check stuff out later.

I'm really a Chrysler guy, my knowledge really being '65-'73 Chrysler C-bodies. So this is a lot of new to me. I'm not loyal to any brand/make/model of car, it just happens that I got one Chrysler, then another one, then made a bunch of friends with people who had them, etc. It just kinda piled upon itself. The Impala was something different.

Mine's a triple blue '78 Coupe. 60,000 original miles, one LONG deceased owner. It sat outside about 15 years unmoved. All things considered, it's not too bad, but it could use some help.

I'm trying to find some cheap suspension upgrades I can throw on it. I don't want to invest an assload of money into it, but if someone had some good stuff cheap, I'd likely be interested.

Like I said, I'm gonna have to check those links later on. Thanks!

Only picture I have right now.

Only a b-car nut would understand.

That's a nice find. I miss my 77, and really, the only reason that I sold it was that it needed more work than I had time for.... which... yours...does...not.. seem... to.. need.

Lemme know if you decide to sell it. The L98 was originally planned for the 77.

As for cheap upgrades, I have a few.

Sway bars. 91-96 cop front bar bolts on. The rear cop bar will bolt on with the correct rear lower control arms, which are still available from GM for about $75 IIRC. I think I have a complete swaybar set still You'd need new swaybar bushings and endlinks (ES sells both), and the rear control arms. You can do this upgrade for less than $200 I think.

The springs you have are soft, and some drop springs for a 94-96 will work. The 78 is lighter, so the drop will be slightly less. Springs are $250 ish new.
You could do cop springs, but they will really raise the ride height of the car, and are not much stiffer than the civilian car ones.

Shocks. Bilstein makes a great set that fit 77-96. Bilstein PN 1104 for the front, and 0929 for the rear. Shox.com has them, as well as other sources.
Last time I looked the fronts were about $100 each, the rears were around $65, but it's been years since I looked.

Body mounts are another nice upgrade. There are some firmer durometer ones still available from GM, and are not as firm as the ES urethanes, which IMO are a bit too much, might as well put aluminum puck in there... not recommended.

Brakes. Find a set of 91-96 front corners. I saw 2 or 3 cars at Parts Galore (the new Warren ave location) with them. These will allow the larger so called 12" rotors and the calipers I told you about in your other post. The bolt pattern will be 5x5, but you can get a set of 3rd gen F-car 1LE rotors that bolt right up, are the same size and are 5x4.75 bolt pattern. I do not know what P.G charges for the knuckles, but if the calipers are reusable, you can do this upgrade for the cost of the knuckles, and the new rotors/pads. So, likely under $150.. This will all fit under the stock 15 wheel.
You can go beefier on the brakes, but you are looking at $600+ for the setup, it's cheaper than the Baer setup, and will still fit in a 15" wheel, ?Baers need a 17" wheel minimum.

Your car likely has a 7.5" 10 bolt. You can upgrade to a 8.5", but I do not know of an easy way for you to keep the 5x4.75 bolt pattern in the back.

You could change to the 5x5 pattern, but the wheel options are not as plentiful as 5x4.75..

Just some thoughts.

Basically, all of the aftermarket suspension mods you can do to a 94-96 Impala SS can be done on your car. The frame is nearly identical, I put a 95 frame under my 77, so the suspension stuff all interchanges.

A good source of suspension info is on http://www.9c1.com/technical/index.html

And if you want to offload the 78 for cheap.. let me know.. I like cheep ;)

Haha, awesome info!

I would like to sell the car, dunno how much yet. I really, really, really like it- but I love my Chryslers more, mostly because I've had them since before I had a license.

And I can't afford 3 project cars.

We'll see how I feel about it once it's on the road. I *almost* bought all the parts for fixing the stock brakes (I have ALL BRAND NEW steel lines, ran me $250, plus all new rubber lines, and a set of EBC green front pads, which I think will work on anything), but now you've tempted me into this other swap. Hmmm....

It has some rust. Bottom of quarters have a 2" diameter hole on each side (which I may/may not fix in my bodyshop class, we'll see), plus driver's floor has a hole, passenger rear rotted in an L shape so it feels softer than it is but likely needs to be replaced anyhow, etc. Doors are dinged up with door opening dings around the handles on both of them, plus they're rusting, of all places, where the window surround is welded to the inner door structure. But it runs/drives, just needs brake work.

It's a 305 2bbl auto, all original unmolested granny mobile, '90s tape deck is only modification from stock thus far. I have an NOS electric trunk opener kit (from GM) for it, unsure if I want to install it or not. It weighs like a whopping 2-3 lbs, so I don't think it'd be a massive issue weight wise. Only options otherwise, far as I can see, are A/C and... that's it. Blue bench (with one or two small cig burns, but otherwise untorn), dash cracked near speaker grille, some lightly faded hard plastic bits, carpet's pretty grungy now, etc. But it's even got manual crank windows.

I don't know. I may have to ask you for some help once I get the ball rolling, haha.
