Age limit on a child in the front seat??

The only reason I ask is because my wife goes to school every night, so its just me and the little guy. Well my car does not have a back seat and this little 2 year old loves HIS mustang. I would love to go cruise around with him, but what are the limits on having a child seat in the front?

I think as long as its a forward facing seat, its ok. I honestly dont think any child seat in the front is illegal, as long as there are no airbags, or the bags are disabled.

I think that's right. I'd call the state police just to be sure. The seat does have to be forward facing.

its up to the parent, there nothing in the law that says antyhing abotu that, i cant beleive the ppl who wont let there kid sit int he front til there 12, i sat in the front seat of my parents cars from like 4yrs up

He just has to be in a child seat. I don't think there is a law about which way the seat faces.

You don't have a passenger airbag, so it's fine either way.

Yeah, if no airbags you are fine. If you do have them, disable them. I don't think there is really an age limit. I know for vehicles with airbags there is a minimum height requirement of something like 4'11". There will probably be a law enforcable by one of those you must be at least this tall to ride in the front seat signs!

I literally took my Chevelle up to the Fire dept down the street from me with the kiddy seat... They gave me lots of good advice. Not to answer your question, but go see them or the police. They take classes for that very reason to educate you and I...

The National SAFE KIDS Campaign rated the nation's occupant protection laws in a report entitled, A National Rating of Child Occupant Protection Laws (Feb.2001). Michigan's law received a failing grade of "F" in part because the law:
  • Allows young children to ride inappropriately restrained.
  • Lacks a legislative mandate for a public child passenger safety education program.
  • Permits a parent to unbuckle a child in a moving car to nurse him/her.
  • Allows children ages 4-8 to ride in a safety belt alone.
  • Has a fine of only $10 and no driver license points for violations.

My only issue is that my front passenger seatbelt doesnt lock unless there is an impact. I dont like that. I could take a reagular adjustable rear belt and use that to hold the car seat in and strap the back of the seat to the cage. I dont like *TESTING* things with my son though, lol. But it would be just like his seat is when its in the back of my 05 monte.

will it lock if you pull it out all the way, then go back in?(not all the way)

try it, pull it out completely, let it retract 1/2 way, see if it locked

I was talking about this with my wife earlier this year. I was just going to do it so I could take my older kid to the Kalloway's show. I'm still going to do it if I can find a seat that will go into an aluminum Kerky. I think the law is just due to airbags, if you don't have them, I wouldn't think it would be a big deal. You can legally drive with kids in a pickup truck with no back seat.

Yes, airbag safety is the ultimate concern.

The kids have gotten bigger now and we've gone to a booster seat for my sun that fits well.

When they were in the forward facing child seats, I was able to tie the straps into the cage too. Just make sure you always have adequate padding on any bars that kids could potentially come in contact with and things should be fine.

I tried it, and it didnt work. The older cars dont have that option.

Let me know what you find out oj wouldn't mind taking the oldest one out in my car once in a while.
