So short story...

wed night i picked up a 86 mustang gt 5 speed (yay i can finally go fast lol) and it ran but barely. car hasn't been on the road since 92 and since then has seen 3k miles thats it. so after plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and 93 octane it finally idled well. but now missed even worse than it did before all of that. (lots of crap being burned out of the cylinders little bit of blue lots of black when rev'd. so last night on woodward i decided tot ry my hand at timing. now it isn't missing but feels like the exhaust is ttoally plugged. it is slow almost stalls when moving from a stop and anything over 2500 rpms is just feeling extremely choked. got back to my cousins house this morning (where im storing it) and after a 2.5-3 mile drive the cats were glowing red.

so the question. could all the missing have been caused by the timing being retarded quite a bit? (cant really see the marks well but seemed to be about 1/4 " retarded ont he crank) and are clogged cats do you think to blame for the lagging?

any suggestions on other things it may need are well appreciated. thank you

i mostly just want it to run right for dream cruise after that i plan on ripping a ton of it apart for fun and 12 next summer.

*side note: it is a speed density car if that means anything

could be clogged fuel injectors. Given how long it sat that makes alot of sense to me. For sure you need to to so diagnostic work. Throwing parts at it from here sure isn't going to fix it.

okay that's what i figure... need to change all fluids and already did basics... also added a belt to the mix. any idea what the best way to clean injectors is??? at this point I'm contemplating taking the whole top half of the motor apart to reclean EVERYTHING.

and injectors make sense cause it also smells rich as hell... thanks for the input sean

Seafoam can be bought at any auto parts store (usually) you run it through your pcv valve (while car is running) let it sit for about 10-15 minutes, start car again and let it run till you don't see anymore smoke, then take it out for a good beating on the freeway!!

Just beware your car is gonna smoke like hell, so I wouldn't advise doing this during a nice day, your neighbors might get pissed :icon_mrgr

I personally wouldn't start tearing the motor apart yet
