Advice on buying Mountain Bike

I bike to work 15 miles each way in the summer. I try to make sure I do it 2-3x a week. With no changes in diet the weight just melts away. With that much cardio your appetite decreases also.

In the HOOD? I hope you open carry. LOL

I bought the Trex "Police Package". I don't know the actual name.
I believe it was around $1,200 new.

It is a very nice bike, I just have to get use to a new one. I put a
lot of miles on the old one.......must......let......go

To the OP, also buy (only $15 to $20) a speedo / odometer for your
new bike. It is really nice to be able to track your mileage.

Dude lower those bar ends! That's a broken wrist waiting to happen. If you want a more upright riding position swap the stem, handle bars or both.

That looks like it would be a good bike for you. I would test ride that one
if I were you. The only thing I didn't like was the price, it's not high or low.

I'd recommend "beating him up on the price a little". New, the bike had a
MSRP of $549.99 - which means it sold for less than that in most cases.

No, not really. Its safe & works very well for me.

Pink bike is a good used bike resource. If you find a model you like, go there and see if you can find it used.

Keep in mind you need to build up your biking strength.
Try biking 2 or 3 times a week, 1 to 3 miles each ride.
Then work up to 6 to 12 miles per ride.

Once you’ve hit the 12 mile range, 20+ miles is more than
doable.

I ended up buying a new bike...The Giant Escape 3 from Jacks bikes in Monroe. So far no complaints..I haven't picked up any accessories yet like a speedo, lights or flat kit...

You can get a nice mount for your phone and use that as the speedo.

Congrats on the purchase. I agree with 347convert- Get the mapmyride app. I'd hold off on lights unless your schedule limits you to mostly riding after dark. A flat kit is essential- tire spoons, pump, patch kit or tube. I'd get miles in the saddle before going too crazy with accessories. If your butt keeps getting too sore, buy padded shorts. If you carry a lot of crap and drink a lot, get a hydration pack. Ride in rain, get rain gear, etc.

If you want to ride for miles and minimally share the road with cars, check out the east-west Downriver Greenway trail. It connects Lower Huron, Willow, Oakwoods, and Lake Erie metroparks, checkout the map. http://trailsmichigan.com/Downriver-Linked-Greenways-East-West-Trail-86.php The map and signage are not that great at Telegraph Rd. From Oakwoods/Will Carleton, you enter Huroc Park then cut through the old Flat Rock neighborhoods and pickup the greenway at Gibraltar road/the old high schools & football field.

Congrats on the purchase! Now get out there and ride!

I've used Endomondo for tracking all of my riding. It works quite well.

I would suggest looking at a new saddle before riding shorts. I was able to switch from the stock saddle on my Trek to a gel one with center relief and it helped. Here is the one I bought:

I was fitted using a gel piece to see where my "sit bones" were. I knew I needed the biggest one, but if you're a smaller guy than I am, it might be worth asking a bike shop to set you up.

Another handy tool is an air pump. You can go either CO2 or hand pump, or they have models that use both. I found a nice Specialized hybrid which mounts under the water bottle rack and is compact.

Something no one has mentioned, but has been essential, is a pack. Having a place to store things is definitely nice.

Congrats Sir! Looks like a nice bike.

As you begin, set reasonable goals. As I stated before, try
to not to go "gun ho", overdo it and burn out. Start out with
a doable distance and build up from there.

Biking from home I think is best if you can, otherwise you
can always drive your bike to a nice park or location for riding.

I really enjoy the ride through Dundee. For a really good cruise
I ride west from Cabela's towards Tecumseh.

It is like riding up north. Yes M50 is a highway of sorts, but the
"shoulder" is 6 feet plus wide & nicely paved. I feel comfortable & safe.

Happy & safe riding to you, and keep us posted how it goes.

I will definitely be riding as much as I can. My schedule allows mostly night rides which I will enjoy most I believe. I rode a few miles last night and it felt nice. I did end up buying a new gel seat with it along with a bottle cage and bottle and kickstand. My butt is sore from the seat but I think I just have to get used to riding again. I like to ride around my town for now until I get the strength to ride the park's and that.....thanks for all the great advice the last few days.....
