plenum is what you need to run in a commercial application that the fire marshal may look at. It is basically fire rated wire. When we used to do wiring we would always buy plenum and upcharge for it. If they didn't want it I would explain what would happen if the fire marshal checked. and they would agree. Really a rip but whatever!
 
Negative....plenum is needed in any application when being ran in an air plenum space. In commercial or residential. The outer sheathing when exposed to heat doesn't produce a toxic fume that can sucked into HVAC intakes and kill you, where non plenum stuff can.
