Ok. I called him and talked to him. It was Asphalt Millings he quoted me on. But....I did some research on the internet and found out that asphalt millings is a good product. A lot of people get this done to dirt driveways all the time. As a matter of fact, I looked up some stats on this stuff and turns out that it costs about 65 dollars a ton. 1 ton covers 17 square feet packed down. This guy is charging less than 60 cents a square foot. This includes all labor.
I've also learned that in some cases asphalt millings are better than actual asphalt. Especially for dirt driveways like mine. Over time, it packs down and gets really hard. Maintenance is minimum, and after being packed down over the years, in most cases you cant even tell a difference between it and actual asphalt. Also read that 1 inch of properly laid asphalt millings is just as strong as 4 inches of asphalt. Asphalt Millings is a mix of concrete and asphalt no larger than 1 inch pieces. When it's laid down, the asphalt fuses the concrete together.
Also, he is accredited in the Better Business Boru of Michigan as an "A" out of A-F and is licensed, insured and offers warranty. In the past 36 months, he's had one issue with a customer about warranty that was resolved after the complaint was made. His office is off of Michigan Ave about 5 miles from my house.
This is what I said on the phone to him tonight: "so if your offering this job for 3K, how do I know it's going to look good? I mean...what kind of quality is it?" His reply was: "I gaurentee all of my work. I can give you multiple customers numbers and you can call yourself and ask. I also want to make your driveway look awesome. If I do a good job on your place, you'll tell someone else and so on."
His portfolio of work was impressive and he's running some serious equipment. Steamrollers, bobcats, a huge paver to lay down the asphalt, big trucks..the whole nine yards. He's not gonna come out here with a bunch of shovels and Mexicans. (no offense to Mexicans.) He said with the crew and equipment, he'll have it done in no time. I guess he's been in this business for 40 years. Opened Power Paving in 2005 and was accredited with the BBB in 2007.
We'll see what happens.
