A guy came to my house today. He owns a company called Power Paving. As some of you know, my driveway is tore up from the floor up. All dirt and really long, winding through the woods. This guy was trying to sell me an asphalt driveway. He seemed legit and knew exactly what to do. He showed up in a nice company truck, he's licensed, insured and even has a toll free number.

He showed me a portfolio of his work and equipment and it looks like he does some kick ass work and pretty big jobs for a lot of places.

He was telling me that he was down on his luck and had no work, so he'll do my driveway for super cheep. He said he has a stock pile of material and all the professional equipment his company owns is already paid off and he just wants to make money to get some of the material cost back. He owns some bad ass machines that you see Michigan road crews working with. He told me he was going to level the whole driveway out and then lay the blacktop down. He priced it out at under 60 cents a square foot. The total bill was 3 grand out the door cash after the job was done. My driveway is 5500 sq feet.

Now I've priced out my driveway before through other company's that I called, and no one was under 12 grand for a complete job. So 3 grand seems like the deal of the century. He also said he would get his crew on it and have it done in one day.

I dont know though. Everything about his company checks out except for the price. My gut feeling tells me that if it's too good to be true, it probably is. I just dont want to be one of those guys that missed a super opportunity because I'm skeptical. He even told me not to pay until the job was done because he already had all the material on hand at his shop. What would you guys do???

Get it in writing. I don't know how you'd get screwed then.

If you do get it in writing make sure you put in something about the quality of the work having to meet certain expectations. My parents had a tile floor done by someone who checked out real nice and it looked like shit but he demanded payment anyhow because he did the work.

Sounds like it's too good to be true. But who knows. As stated, if you don't have to pay until the job is done, why not? With the economy the way it is up there, I'm sure he is hurting, maybe he just needs a quick buck.

Get references and go see the jobs and talk to the people...60 cents a square foot is too good to be true..
Sounds like he's using Asphalt Millings....(Not the stuff you pave parking lots with) You cant "stock pile" hot asphalt...

yeah i agree with ^^^^^ deff doesnt sound like he is using new stuff since idk how u can stock pile new asphalt..

I'm in the same situation, I have a 1000'+ driveway but it would cost way too much to have it asphalted. If this turns out to be true give me his number!

No, but "His" Company might be doing some work nearby...

My Buddy got his whole parking lot redone for $500 when the road crews were doing a nearby road! :secret::secret:

I agree with some of the other posts....First thing I thought was to pay him when it is done.....You cant really loose....Get a contract in writing.

Call Rob Wolchek at Fox 2 if he does screw you over.

all i have to say about out of town asphalt guy's GYPSY'S!

not telling you what to do but make sure thru out your driveway he does 1.5" base and a 1.5" top coat! and they can not be done at the same time! most legit asphalt guy's will do the base one day come back the next day and tack it and top coat it!

i have a buddy that own's a asphalt company up here in port huron that is why i know about it? i am not trying to drum up work for him just telling you what to look for?

hope this help's and if it were me get a quote from a local guy as well.. you will be surprised in how close the bids will be!

i have to ask one ? did the guy tell you he has asphalt already payed for at the asphalt plant and that is why he is doing it so cheap? or he already has prices locked in with them?

you're right to be cautious.... a certain Entourage look-a-like that I know had some drywall work done by a guy who came door to door.... a week later, there's a huge split in the drywall mud and the guy has blown town.

Protect yourself.

Ask for references, check out his old work, make some phone calls and visits. Finally, get his price and guarantee in writing.

Then go for it!
