A guy came to my house today to give me a price on my driveway...

Holy shit. I saw a story or two exactly the same as this on various forums over time, and they all ended up badly. The most recent, the paver finished about half and then "ran out" of materials and tried sticking the guy for another payload's worth of tar or whatever. The job was shitty too, he said. So he refused to pay anymore because that wasn't part of the understood deal, and it got heated. Ended up he called the cops and lo and behold the paver was known for doing this and the cops knew all about him. I don't remember the end of the story though.

there was stories about this shit happeneing on the new's a few years back as well!

Ok. I called him and talked to him. It was Asphalt Millings he quoted me on. But....I did some research on the internet and found out that asphalt millings is a good product. A lot of people get this done to dirt driveways all the time. As a matter of fact, I looked up some stats on this stuff and turns out that it costs about 65 dollars a ton. 1 ton covers 17 square feet packed down. This guy is charging less than 60 cents a square foot. This includes all labor.

I've also learned that in some cases asphalt millings are better than actual asphalt. Especially for dirt driveways like mine. Over time, it packs down and gets really hard. Maintenance is minimum, and after being packed down over the years, in most cases you cant even tell a difference between it and actual asphalt. Also read that 1 inch of properly laid asphalt millings is just as strong as 4 inches of asphalt. Asphalt Millings is a mix of concrete and asphalt no larger than 1 inch pieces. When it's laid down, the asphalt fuses the concrete together.

Also, he is accredited in the Better Business Boru of Michigan as an "A" out of A-F and is licensed, insured and offers warranty. In the past 36 months, he's had one issue with a customer about warranty that was resolved after the complaint was made. His office is off of Michigan Ave about 5 miles from my house.

This is what I said on the phone to him tonight: "so if your offering this job for 3K, how do I know it's going to look good? I mean...what kind of quality is it?" His reply was: "I gaurentee all of my work. I can give you multiple customers numbers and you can call yourself and ask. I also want to make your driveway look awesome. If I do a good job on your place, you'll tell someone else and so on."

His portfolio of work was impressive and he's running some serious equipment. Steamrollers, bobcats, a huge paver to lay down the asphalt, big trucks..the whole nine yards. He's not gonna come out here with a bunch of shovels and Mexicans. (no offense to Mexicans.) He said with the crew and equipment, he'll have it done in no time. I guess he's been in this business for 40 years. Opened Power Paving in 2005 and was accredited with the BBB in 2007.

We'll see what happens.

Get a written quote. Any of you guys ever hear of a Contractor's Lien?
See it all the time...Scary shit for home owners with shitty contractors.

Ok. I called him and talked to him. It was Asphalt Millings he quoted me on.
No, but "His" Company might be doing some work nearby...
My Buddy got his whole parking lot redone for $500 when the road crews were doing a nearby road! :secret::secret:
Told you it wasn't Asphalt...........I got about a million tons of that crap in my yard.
Just make sure the sub-base is solid or else you'll be throwing away $3000

....all i have to say about out of town asphalt guy's GYPSY'S! ...

What he said, most likely. Caveat Emptor !!!

Could be a "gypsy" scam or he might be using the pavement job as a reason to case your house/neighborhood with hopes of breaking in later down the road when you or your neighbors are not at home.

A few of these scammers were out in full force on the eastside after the weather started to break a few weeks ago.

Be very careful. Copy down the guy's license plate number "just in case."

like someone else said, make sure you enter into a contract with him. and make sure the contract spells out the exact scope of work, and warranty.

Yay! The driveway might be smoother next time I head out there. My blazer almost didn't have clearance over some of those 'bumps' in it.

I would like this guys contact. I am looking to have a section put in soon. Will he go to the northern SCS and Mt Clemens area for work?

Millings arent bad. Esp if you live out in the woods and Have a current gravel driveway, its a upgrade for sure. The material isnt as "finished" as black top but after its compacted and works together it gets pretty hard. As stated above, its worthless without a good base under it.

Do it. You don't have to pay until it's done so you have nothing to lose.

The guys you did our parking lot didn't want any money until it was done. I think they took 2 or 3 days. Then....the owner said....Oh it's late in the year, just make me monthly payments throughout the winter because I don't work all winter. If you pay me now, I'll blow it all on beer and hookers. So, we paid him once a month for like 4-6 months.

They use alot of the milling around here. Even ODOT will get the milling when they strip out a road, they use it later for berm work.

The stuff does seem to pack down decent, sounds llike part of his price is grading and leveling your drive.
