99 Jeep Cherokee help

When I was pulling into my sub earlier the check engine light went on. Pulled in front if my house. It did not act any different when the light went on.3 hours later it won't start. It cranks but won't fire up. I squirted a little starting spray down the throttle body. Still will not start. Does not any different with the spray. Looks like I have a spark problem. What do you think happened? What do I need to replace?

jeeps can show check engine codes thru the dash. if you cycle off-on three times quickly i think itll pulse the code to ya

some of them do that (reading codes via dash) without issue, but ive had some that never do it (my 2000 and 2001 included).

best bet is to try to read the codes via the dash but if you cant rent a tool or buy one.

im guessing the light is a misfire code caused by a cam/crank sensor. ie, no spark.

does your jeep have the coil on plug or distributor?

My problem is I disconnected the battery and it cleared the code.

if it started fine till you disconnected the battery, I would bet you have a cam sensor syncronizer that siezed for a split second, turned in the hole, and now your cam sensor is out of time, the fix is a new syncronizer

if you look at the syncronizer, just will see a mark where it dragged under the clamp

p.s., this is so common I have a new unit out in the garage, lol

It did not start before I disconnected the battery. I figure if I cleared the code then it would start. Like I said drove it home. Light went on before I got home. Parked it and 3 hours later would not start. Just cranked and cranked and did not act different when I sprayed some starting fluid in the throttle body leading me to believe it is not getting spark. Going out to buy a crank sensor. All searches on the web point at that.

Yeah, has a distributor so it's not going to have a CPS.

Well I am going to have to get the check engine light to come back on and try and figure what code is coming up.

condition of coil?

even though you have a dist. you DO have a cps.

Here's the procedure for testing the CPS on the Jeep 4.0......Good Luck!

CPS TESTING PROCEDURE 1991 – 2001 4.0L H.O. engines

1. Near the rear of intake manifold, disconnect sensor pigtail harness connector from main wiring harness.
2. Place an ohmmeter across terminals B and C (A-B-C looking into connector left to right with the part with the notch in the middle on the right) Ohmmeter should be set to 1K-to-1OK scale for this test.
3. The meter reading should be open (infinite resistance). Replace sensor if a low resistance is indicated.

CPS TESTING PROCECURE for 1987 – 1990 4.0 L engines

Test # 1

Get a volt/ohm meter and set it to read 0 - 500 ohms. Unplug the CPS and measure across the CPS connector's A & B leads. Your meter should show a CPS resistance of between 125 - 275 ohms. If the CPS is out of that range by much, replace it.

Test # 2

You'll need a helper for this one. Set the volt/ohm meter to read 0 - 5 AC volts or the closest AC Volts scale your meter has to this range. Measure across the CPS leads for voltage generated as your helper cranks the engine. (The engine can't fire up without the CPS connected but watch for moving parts just the same!) The meter should show .5 - .8 VAC when cranking. (That's between 1/2 and 1 volt AC.) If it's below .5vac, replace it.

id just replace the CPS (crank sensor) anyway, I keep one in the truck just in case. they are cheap and usually the no-spark problems with these engines.

The guy at Murrays claimed I don't have one. LOL

after leaving there and going online and borrowed a scan tool. I do have a CPS. Feel like calling up Murrays/o'reilys and bitching at them. Bought one at Autozone. $85.00

located on the drivers side of the bellhousing, screwed to the bellhousing
