I guess I never started a thread over here, lol. I'll just copy what I have so far from another thread of mine...

A short history about the car... I bought it 100% stock in '07 and went 13.01@107 with a JLT CAI and full exhaust (Bassani mids, Bassani catted x, and FR500 catback). I was so frustrated by this that I said "F" 12s, I'm going for 11s. I bought a Vortech S-trim the next week that ended up putting down 502/433 on 10psi at just 6k rpm (ran out of fuel). The stock transmission and rear end crapped out on me so those were replaced with a fully built T56 and a Torsen T2R/4.10 gear combo for the rear. This combo netted me 11.80@123 one of the two occasions I was able to make it to the track in ’08, but I had plenty of fun on the street. Obviously, there was plenty left on the table and my terrible 60’ skills and shortshifting at 6k were taking a toll on my ETs.

From there, the car snowballed. I took it out once in April of ’09 and decided I wanted to change a few things up. Initially, this was going to be a new a/a intercooler setup and a suspension change. From there, it went to pulling the motor for a build and eventually selling the Vortech and T56 for higher hp turbo numbers on the horizon. The car has been sitting since last April and I’m getting damn restless. Of course, I’ve had another project to keep me busy in the meantime, another 99 Cobra I picked up for daily duties that quickly acquired an eaton swap and put down 456/402 on 8psi. Nevertheless, its time to focus my concentration back on my money pit and get this thing done for a road trip scheduled for May 14-16.

Now, where it is now… I’ll be grabbing random stuff from my other thread on a different forum until I catch you guys up.

My roommate and I will be building everything from the ground up. I’m actually pretty nervous about the short block assembly because I’ve never done one before and this stuff doesn’t come cheap.

Teksid that came out of the car (64k miles)
CP Pistons, 11cc
Manley 03/04 rods
Worked over stock forged crank

I’ve decided to delete basically everything in the engine bay so this will be a manual brake/manual steer setup. I also plan on shaving down the front cover to include nothing but the timing marks, since I won’t be running anything but the crank pulley, water pump, and alternator :)

Also, to resolve the whole non-heated garage issue, I decided to bring EVERYTHING into the house, lol. I set up the entire front end on an engine stand so I can mock up the turbo hotside and not have any surprises when I install it back in the car (or hopefully very little)

The sway bar isn't on in the pictures but I made an adapter plate to mimic the bottom of the frame rail so I can bolt the sway bar pretty much exactly where it should sit while in the vehicle.

I also had the summit parts come in:

We have feeler gauges, ARP piston ring compressor, an oil cooler (doesn't work for shit) FRPP delete, and a meziere (edit) inline thermostat housing. I'm going to postpone the motor build until I finish the turbo kit so we'll see how fast I can get this turned around.

The "holset" inlet flange came in but it was wrong. The guy sent me a standard t4 sized flange. I'll be modifying the turbo to fit the flange now. This way, when I'm ready to upgrade, I'm not restricted to holset turbos.

Picked up my custom radiator last week, looks awesome

IMG_1361.jpg

I also got my downpipe piping (3.5") and random other hotside bits a little while ago...

IMG_1359.jpg

I threw the radiator in the car so check fitment. Its exactly what I was looking for. The stock radiator mounts to the inside of the radiator support to leave room for the a/c crap that is neatly tucked underneath the radiator support. Since I'm not running a/c I wanted to utilize that space. I was able to step up from something like a 5/8" core to a 2" core AND stuff it in there flush with the inner edge of the radiator support. This along with the two slim fans I'll be moving over from my stock radiator saves me approximately 6" of engine bay space! They also look much cleaner than stock so I'm excited.

Here is a picture of the bay in its current condition. I have PLENTY of work to do...

So there's been a little headway, mostly buying more parts though. On the way, we have:

PA 8-bolt Flexplate
FRPP Aluminum Driveshaft
Moroso Catchcan
-10AN Bulkhead fitting for the oil pan
-12AN weldon fitting for the catchcan
4R70W transmission crossmember
Automatic Shifter Cable Assembly
99GT Automatic Trans Wiring Harness
4R70W driveshaft yoke (can't use the one on the FRPP driveshaft)

That's a lot of money if you add it up, lol

I picked up a 4R70W two days ago for teardown. I'll be adding a manual valvebody, more clutches, a few other odds and ends, and regasketing everything. I still need to figure out what the hell I'm going to do about a convertor (which won't be cheap).

I'm worried about finishing by the deadline. There's just SOOO much to do its crazy.

Working on the hotside piping right now, I'll post pics when I have something worthwhile to post :/

Everything is tacked together right now, didn't realize how dusty everything is! I still need to mount the turbo mount to the front cover (waiting on dowels, you'll see) and then everything should be good to go for final welding. The turbo mount is just a rough in, I'll be cutting some metal out of it to make it look a little better in due time. I need to redrill the turbo for standard t4 and have my good friend clean it up for me before I throw it on for good. Once everything gets final welded, its on to the ridiculously nervous task of building the shortblock myself :/

Moving along... deadline is coming quickly, I don't think I'll make it but who knows.

Alright... after a very long hiatus, I'm back on track... I had some issues with the machining and the block had to go back. It ended up sitting in the shop for over a month until my guy could get to it.

In the meantime I worked on little things here and there but I was literally at a standstill with most of this stuff until I got that back...

Things I've gotten done in the meantime:
Clean 4R70W transmission
Mock up wastegate section on spare engine
Mock up downpipe and muffler
Grind front cover smooth
Modify catch can for crankcase vent AN fittings
Install bulkhead fitting in oil pan for turbo return
Among other random things...

Still need to buy:
FRPP 80lb Injectors
BUNCH more AN fittings and lines
Oil Filter Relocation
Oil Feed Bits
Misc. Couplers and Clamps

I still need to button a few things up... throw the valve covers, intake manifold, motor mounts, front cover, etc. on the engine. Waiting on some more welding to be done but things are coming together finally.

Ripped into the 4R70W transmission in the garage a little while ago too. Took it to the pressure washer, cleaned it up, and pulled the pan to see what I've gotten myself into. The thing looks great. The fluid coming out was clean and the magnet in the pan looks awesome for the miles. Oh, and its a 4R75W! Its just a little beefier than a standard 70, better clutches. The 75s come in the Mach1s and the Marauders.

Stock valvebody (manual valvebody to be installed)

IMG_1483.jpg

These were in the pan when I pulled it... anyone have any ideas? I'm thinking the yellow piece goes to the bottom of the dipstick. Hopefully the other pieces came out of the valvebody that I'll be replacing but I want to know for sure.

IMG_1479.jpg

So yea, all in all, getting something accomplished.

~Eric

So this is where I'm at. I've already been told what the yellow plug is that I found in the trans pan so I'm clear there but I'm not sure what the other pieces are. I also pulled the heads back off yesterday and swapped the head gaskets out for the FelPro MLS Blues because I wasn't 100% comfortable with the gaskets that have been tossed around the garage for 6 months. I also finished the timing bits last night. I'll post pics when I get a bit more accomplished.

~Eric

The yellow plug is from the factory. If pligs the holes untill the dipstick is shoved through.Since its in the pan, that means the trans was prol never serviced. Those other pieces are NOT supposed to be in the pan.I'd find out where they came from.

Yea, the trans has relatively low miles on it so its doesn't surprise me that its never been serviced.

keep up the good work eric

Thank you sir. Tuning is still up in the air :/

bout time slim .... good to see again .

I know... its been a long time. I haven't driven this car since April 2009 and then it was just around the block. I haven't had it out since 2008, lol.

nice write up
sounds like a great setup

Thank you sir! I'm nervous about the turbo... not a lot of v8 guys running these so I'm not sure where the power is going to land. Its a t4 so I can always swap it out if I need to.

looking good!

Did you put a billet trigger wheel or billet oil pump gears in the motor?

Thanks Carl. No billet, standard wheels and FRPP cobra oil pump. We'll see how it holds up but I'm pretty confident.

Sweet project man. I like all the progress pics and updates. Good work bro. Keep it up!

Thanks Kyle. I'll have to get it out to you when I'm finished for a quick romp. I'll be tearing it down this winter to make it pretty, we'll be in touch ;) I should call you before then though, haven't seen ya in awhile.

cool
i would wipe all the extra arp lube off.

I probably will, the pan isn't on yet.

I pulled the heads and replaced the head gaskets with Felpro 4 layer MLS, finished the timing bits. I went to install the oil pump pickup and realized that the extended studs were in the wrong place for the pickup support :( I swapped everything around and got that buttoned up. I cleaned and will be modifying the pan for the turbo drain bulkhead and bolting that up. My welder finished the front cover so I'll throw that on and the valve covers... at that point its all external stuff. I opened the manual valvebody box and started reading the directions. I'm honestly a bit nervous about it, its pretty complicated and not in my realm of knowledge so we'll see how that goes. I'll get pics of everything tomorrow!
