My dad has got a 94 econline conversin van, has been sitting for the past few years. Every month or so i would start it up and drive it around the block. Went to start it last week and it wont start, it seems to almost start once every few seconds but then it just turns over with no sign of wanting to do anything. I tried starting fluid and it didnt do much. When i turn the key i hear the fuel pump come on, and i know theres a little over a 1/4 tank of gas in it. I pulled a boot and there seems to be spark (but not very strong) what should i do next? pull a plug and see if its got fuel? change the plugs, wires and cap? i need to get this thing running so he can get exhaust put on it and drive it some.

thanks,
Ryan

Check for good ground. Corroded cables at the battery would do it. Dead (weak)battery as well.
If it has sat, the posibility of the fuel gonig bad might be a factor.

Dump a bit of gas into the intake, and see if it coughs to life.

To check the ground, take a jumper cable and bridge from the negative post to the block/intake or any metal engine part.

Those two tests should let you know if the issue is spark or fuel.

Wow. I have the same problem with my 85 Econoline. I tried engine starting fluid and she still will not catch. I can hear the fuel pump coming on so i am going to change the module on the distributor in couple of days.

Let me know how your situation works out, Ryan.

trying a bit of fuel in the throttle body is a good start. the early e-vans ,92-95, now use a newer redesigned fuel pump module. the originals set too close to the bottom of the tank and can actually starve themselves out of fuel. the newer ones are spring loaded and actually set themselves to the proper distance from the bottom of the tank. if it's been sitting, perhaps any crap in the tank has settled, and clogged the screen. as far as the 85, try cranking the engine, slowly turn the key back until just before the engine stops cranking. seems to recall those modules have a run and start circuit. sometimes you can overlap the two and get it to fire. hope this helps.

thanks guys, maybe when the snow clears i will try to mess with it some more. I will keep you posted Foncarelli

Pull a spark plug and see if you have a good spark and the condition of the plug. You may have to put a new set in all gas fouled!

I ended up pulling the module off and getting it tested. After testing ok, pulled the cap and all the contacts was corroded pretty bad. I am going to change the coil which looks like a pain to get too behind that damn bracket. I picked up a new cap and rotor, also. I figured i would just change all of that stuff while i am at it.

Hey, Ryan. Did you get that van started?

Hey, Ryan. Did you get that van started?

funny you ask, i screwed with it for an hour today. It started the first time i tried with starting fluid and ran for 5 seconds @ like 100 rpm if that then died and wouldnt start again. I tried putting some gas in it and checked for spark at the plugs and coil and there was. Im going to get my fuel pressure gauge/tester and see how much fuel pressure its got, then go from there. thanks evryone for your input!
