92 LX Hatch -- Shooting for 10's

I picked up a 1992 LX hatchback with a running 4 cylinder and ugly red interior.

So far I've stripped the interior out, ditched the heater, and had a 10 point cage + through floor subframes.

Here's the old boat anchor of a motor:

I'm taking my time on this project and trying to build a streetable car for the summer that will still run 10's (at least) at the track.

That said, I've think I've gone a little overboard on the powertrain:

  • A4 Block -- .40 over (348 cid)
  • Diamond dished pistons (9.2:1 compression)
  • Eagle 5.400 rods
  • Eagle 3.400 forged crank (internal balanced)
  • TFS Twisted Wedge Heads -- 205CNC ported by Total Engine Airflow
  • Jesel shaft rockers & solid roller lifters
  • Supervictor carb intake
  • CSU 850CFM blow through carb
  • Extreme Velocity pro carb hat
  • Vortech YSi w/driver side mount
  • 8" crank pulley & 3" SC pulley
  • Procharger blow off valve
  • .700" lift solid roller cam by Jay Allen
  • Moroso Evac pump system
  • Kooks 1 7/8" long tube headers
  • 3.5" exhaust
  • Dynamic Might Mite C4 w/trans break
  • PI Stallion convertor (3500 stall)
  • 4:11 gear

I'm hoping to make some good horsepower numbers out of this combo, but until it runs I really don't know how much boost it'll make or what kind of HP is going to come out of it. I've tried to get all good parts so I can hopefully beat on it and not break much.

Here's the old front K member that was replaced by a QA1 unit:

More pics to follow. This post is getting long so I'm going to break it up.

I plan to have the axle tubes welded up and put some Team Z stuff back there when I get the project further along (running & drivable) and have the $$$.

Passenger side door has some rust on it. I'd like to get the whole car painted when I get the mechanical stuff working:

No lotto yet, but I keep trying. I've been picking at this project for about 2 years now.

How do you like those heads?

I'm really curious how much power this is going to make and how it's going to run on the street. Fingers crossed I'll be ready for spring.

I was making good progress on the motor but I just hit a snag with my crankshaft. Even though the damn thing is brand new, ALL of the journals have a variance between the middle of the journals and the sides.

I talked to the guys at Moldex and they said that they see it all the time with the eagle stuff.

Long story short, I now get to have Moldex grind it to 10/10 to fix it, and re-nitride it.

$350 down the tubes.

Dammit.

nice build. g/l with it and keep us posted. i may steal some of your ideas for my notch. the c/m bumper looks intriguing. not to hijack, but anyone care to comment on fitment, or throw up the link to the guy who makes them. i recall seeing it a while back.

That bumper fit perfectly. I had to unbolt the old fiberglass one, and then pull out the body shocks. After that, it bolted right up. A quick coat of rattlecan later and it was good to go.

I also have one for the rear but I didn't get to that just yet. You can get these from a guy named '302man' on the nmra board. I think he's Dothan Racing or something like that. He had a pretty reasonable price for them too.

Also, some other credit where credit is due: The head were by Total Engine Airflow in Ohio and all of the engine machine work was done by Thompson Automotive in Reford. If anyone is looking for a good shop they are really nice to deal with and had a fast turn around time.
