91 Sonoma "The Slonoma"

Small update, my dash went to shit, as cautious as I've been to not damage it did no good. Propped the cab up with a 2x4 so I could put casters on the pallet I have the cab sitting on. As I tipped the cab back down the 2x4 fell over and my attempt to kick it out of the way failed, it dropped right on the dash. Was enough to ruin my night... Then I picked up a small block from nitrous Pete. We both ran the casting numbers and thought that it was a 4 bolt main motor. But once I tore into it I found it was a 2 bolt. But it wasn't a big deal since this is a temporary motor anyways. Found its been rebuilt at least once before as the cylinders are already .030 over, rod bearings are .010 over, and the cam is stamped 11-94. Which running those numbers showed just a stock replacement cam. So I'll order a rebuilt kit and still debating on what cam to run.

Got 8 empty holes! Which was quite the project in itself. 3 cylinders the pistons had rusted to the walls so bad that I had to soak them for a few days with oil and convince them to move via rubber mallet and BFH. But after a few passes with a hone I believe its a salvageable motor. I haven't had the free time to drop off all the major components to the machine shop yet but we will see what he says when he sees it all. Got all the front suspension torn off except for the lower control arms. So pretty soon the frame will be ready to meet Mr. Sandblaster. Need to straighten the tail of the frame yet but I haven't taken the time to dig up proper measurements to know everything gets pulled to spec. I'm debating on ordering what's left of original body parts in aftermarket since so far I've got: hood, drivers door, both rockers, passenger cab corner, tailgate, one fender (drivers side I think). Since I want a "new" 91 truck when its done I think it would be worth the money to just have every panel brand new and no rust hiding.

Your gonna be real surprised when your searching for another dash. I had a very hard time finding a good condition one with I was shocked thinking."it's just a s10" parts should be easy to get. Lol I'm looking for black/gray dash also if you find one. Along with the rest of the interior to switch from blue.

No pictures recently. Haven't really touched the truck. Friend of mine asked for help doing a timing chain on his Nissan. Which turned into a nightmare. Damn car has been here all week so I can't roll the cab out to work on it. But I got all my body panels out and checked them all, dropped off a few parts for paint, then found one fender to be to rusted for me to want, so I'll be ordering a new one Monday and it'll go to paint also. Soon as I get the rockers and cab floor situated I'll load that up for paint. Then hopefully I can get the frame done while all that's out. I've ruled my bed as a loss. So I'm looking for a cleaner replacement for it.

Best day at work ever! Tahoe came in with a "blown motor". So I investigated it a little closer and bought it before anyone knew what was going on. So I got a complete 5.3 with 76k with harness and computer and coils for to cheap to post here. Haha. So now the small block I got from nitrous Pete is going to sit in the back corner of the garage until I piece together enough cheap go fast parts to put it in my z71.

X2 that is a nice score!!

Started tearing into the 5.3 the other day. But I came down sick (again) so progress has been slow. Found that not only did I have a loose rocker on cylinder 4, but also a bent push rod on cylinder 1. And the amount of slug in the oil pan kills me. Granted it's a low mileage motor, but its an ex-police Tahoe so I'm sure it sat idling for hours on end.

Not the end of the world...

Going back to those replacement body parts, i'm assuming they're chinese replacements? If so, you're going to have fitament issues somewhere. Also make sure that every inch of them is sealed because they tend to rust real quick compared to oem parts.

Yes they're Chinese. I've already talked to my painter about making sure they're painted 100%. He already gave me pointers on how to handle the fitment issues. So I should be set. Might take longer than expected but I don't see it being that bad.

Progress has been at a crawl lately so nothing photo worthy currently. New born son has been sponging my free time, but I love every minute of it.

I have a NV3500 sitting at work waiting to come home and get freshened up, along with a 4.10 10 bolt. Figure we shall see what breaks first. I picked up a new carbide bit since my old one was toast, so hopefully one of these days I'll get these heads hogged out and flowing better. Then send them to the machine shop to get decked and get a professional set of eyes on what will be the first set of heads I've ported. (We all gotta learn sometime right?)

I recently got a sandblaster that I've been playing with so I'm hoping to get it figured out so I can strip the frame and get it painted before weather goes to shit again. But I'm sure I'll have a busy summer so we shall see how much get done.
