91 Sonoma "The Slonoma"

So I was near certain I already made a project log for this truck, but I can't find it. So here goes another shot.

Story starts a few years ago when I was working at O'Reillys in Jackson. A coworker who I had became friends with saw my 92 Sonoma that I beat the shit out of regularly mentioned he had a 91 Sonoma that he lost interest in. He bought it new in 1990 with 12 miles on the clock. He used it as his show truck and pretty much just lowered it and put an asinine stereo in it. When his son destroyed the gas tank via man hole cover he tore the truck apart to bring it up to modern day standards. So after months of talking about this truck I finally bought it only having seen pictures. The truck was originally fitted with a 2.5 four banger, 5 speed manual trans, and all manual options included manual steering. When I bought the truck it only had 72k miles. But sadly less than ideal storage conditions have hindered the true beauty of the truck. Now after I bought it I didn't have the time or garage to work on the truck, so it was stored out in a field for another couple years. Fast forward to about a couple months ago, I got moved into a place with a garage, so the truck came home for the much needed work. Enough typing, on with pictures!!!!

WOW, from a beauty queen to a field mouse and now on its way back to a beauty queen. Talk about full circle. What is the plan for it? I see 91 Slow'noma - LSX Pro Touring in your sig

Insane! Looks like it was on the "drug around a swamp" show truck circuit!!! :)

Progress looks exciting for sure.

The plan with the truck for now is just get a carbed 350 in it with a 5 speed for this summer. Then over the winter I'm going to build a 4 link rear for it and track down a ls based 4.8-6.0 and go fuel injection. I want to run the truck at Waterford hills and Ginger man and maybe find a few autocross events to compete in.

Money pit, this dash actually isn't what I want anyways. I want the unicorn 82-85/6 dash. But if I can't find one this one will go back in.

I have a collection of rare dashes, even the impossible to find 91 only NON a/c dash( no vents by doors or above radio)

what color is your current dash and any cracks by the defroster vents?

Current dash is charcoal gray. No cracks at all that I remember. I do know that the back side of the storage cubby down below the glove box is all cut/broken from previous modifications. I'll try to get pictures of it when I get home.

Some of my parts came yesterday and today. Still waiting on the passenger rocker panel. So after work today I started cutting out the floor and realized there's a second cab mount "brace" that I didn't see or know about before. So tomorrow I'm going to see if it's available otherwise I'll have to make one. Found some more rust in the rocker I'm already replacing and some in the lower door skin. This weekend I'm dragging the cab out of the corner to see if I want to replace the whole door, or just get a lower skin. After I found that I started grinding all the burrs off from the thousand self tappers ran into the floor. Which killed a flap wheel in no time. So I took a break from the cab and focused on getting the broken leaf springs off. The shackle bolts seized in the bushings as expected, so I just cut the shackles in half and called it good for now since I'll be pressing new bushings into the frame at a later date. Now to the front, to my amazement, one of the bolts came out of the bushing with the help from my 5 pound mini sledge. But no luck on the other side, so its still hanging on the frame for now. But enough rambling on with a few pictures.

Moneypit, here's a couple pictures of my dash. Top is crack free, but the previous owner cut the lower section for stereo stuff I assume. But it looks like maybe the black portion is replaceable. But I'm not sure. If I can't find a 82-85 for it I'll toss this one back in.
