64 1/2 mustang need help please read

well now I have a project my fiance went out and bought me a 64.5 mustang for my birthday. Seeing as how my father just past a week ago today and he used to have one she thought this would be great for me and my son to do in remembrance to my father. but what I was wondering is if some of you that know restoration projects if you could give me some pointers or maybe if even close to me could come by and tell me if it can even bee done it has alot of rust underneath. I just dont want to get in it and not be able to complete it I know cars but never done a restoration so any help will be appreciated thanks

some of the parts have all glass, new chrome fornt bumper, fenders, truck, hood, floor pans

x2! Starting with a car that rough you will want to really find out what it needs.

My dad and I have been restoring his '73 Mustang for a few years now. We are trying to do it in phases. Obviously, first you have to tear it down and then do body work. After that, I'd suggest focusing on one system at a time. Once the body work (or at least the floor pans and replacement panels) is done work focus on suspension/steering, then brakes, and soon enough you'll have a rolling chassis. After you have a rolling chassis you could go anywhere. Could work on getting in an engine/trans or work on the interior. IMO, thats just the way to do a full resto. It makes it a lot easier only working on one thing at once instead of spending 10 minutes putting a door speaker, than an hour running a new brake line, than 20 minutes putting on the front bumper.
 
alot depends on how much you can do youself, everything you need to restore the car is avalible, if your going to pay a shop to do this it will be expensive. i do this everyday and have saved some of the most rotted cars you can think of.

you are more than welcome to stop the shop anytime and i'll talk to you about it and show you what it will take to restore it. Todd
 
im concerned about the underside and nothing being left after media blasting or dipping. Anyone know a good place to go for that. I was thinking of having a shop take care of the unibody and I would finish everything else panels, paint, engine actually my step dad is giving me his sons 351w that he was building before he past away this winter in a snow mobile accident. Also where is your shop located at I would defently want to stop by if you could take a couple minutes to talk
 
that's in Garden City right isnt it?....I drove by when it was on the trailer yesterday and turned around for another look...I was in the white expedition

I can say good luck to you sir!! that will be one good size project!!

I dont have specific info, but what i do know is never rush through a resto project. Take your time, it will take a long time and lots of money. But when it is done it will be beautiful and a great triute to your late father!!
 
yes it is in garden city and was on the trailer infront of my house probably right after she gave it to me and my step dad gave me my b-day card saying he was giving me my step-brothers 351w short block all new that he was building before he passed. I had lots of people stopping and asking last night if you know cars come back by and give me your 2 cents need as much as possible
 
First off- sorry about your dad. Secondly- that's a good woman you have there. Lastly, it looks like you have your hands full with that project. If you don't have the right tools and the skills to perform the work. You might wanna put a "for sale" sign on it and start with something in better shape. This project will be a huge undertaking especially if you have to pay someone to do the work for you. I see the "spendometer" going crazy on this one. Best of luck to you and once again- sorry about your dad.
 
thanks I plan on doing alot of the work myself but might pay someone to take care of the underside floor pans, trunk just making sure the little bit of fram it has will be safe then I will take it all from there with engine/trans, interior, body and paint. This is something I will be doing over the years I know it wont be done in 1 year or anything and im probably looking at 10-15 thousand when it is all said and done.
 
Hey i will say this...If this is something YOU want to do in memory of our dad...DO IT....It does not matter how long it takes...My 87 i bought in Early 2003 and my father and I were going to build it together....Unfortunatly by September 03 my dad Was diagnosed with CJD (human form of Mad cows disease) and by late Sept 03 he passed.....Now i have sold ALOT of shit i had for the car...at one point i needed a trans and driveshaft to have it track ready...but other things came into the picture (first child)...But thecar itself having some sentimental value to it because is was a project for me and my father i never sold it....nor will i ever sell it....So if it's in your heart do it....Cuz in the end it will be something you will be proud of and something your dad would have and will love....Sorry bout the long post....

Good luck to you. I'm sure it will be really cool when you are done with it. At times it's the small details that slow a project like this down. Just keep forging ahead and make realistic expectations of when you will have things done. One good thing is the National Parts Depot is located off I-275. I'm sure they can provide a wealth of knowledge to get through the tough parts. Keep us posted on it's progress.
 
first thing my son said today to me when he woke up was dad can we go work on the mustang it was great. So think im going ot try and bring this one back over time just need to find a good guy to take care of frame for me then I can keep moving on slowly.
