I am thinking about buying one. Any recommendations, do I need a 1080p?

Thanks,
I have a 40" phillips LCD with 1080p and I still think my Sony 40" (Tube) looks clearer.... My 40" is a monster and weights like 390lbs though.

I have the same 40" Sony CRT and I love it. I would like something like a 50" flat panel for the basement but I probably won't be shopping for it for a year or so.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

crts look better. same goes for computer monitors but people like the compact size more than the better picture. not saying a 1080p plasma looks bad...but crts look better.

1080p is a worthless industry buzzword designed to generate more revenue...for the most part. Of course there is no debate that it is a higher resolution, and with a higher resolution source like Chicken Little Blu-Ray DVD or a computer a giant ass 1080p TV will look better than a 720p set at close range, but in the 42" size range you'll have to be very, very close to notice any difference.

I have a 40" Samsung LCD for my bedroom. It looks bad ass on HD material from 8-10 feet, but the black, like all LCD's, is total shit. Don't let any sheister try and tell you otherwise. Of all the $2500ish LCD's this one had the best combo of aesthetics and picture.

The other set I'd consider is the non XBR 40" Sony. They fucked up big time between the last XBR (great) and this one (not great). Just looks stupid.

In order to get the best picture from you LCD or Plasma a set of component cables are a must. They make a HUGE difference. You can't expect to use a regular cable cord, plug it in and get an excelent picture.

I got a 65" old school projection widescreen that is deeper than most of your guys TV's are wide! Old school is coming back!

Seriously, though, the advertising is very confusing these days. I noticed recently that Circuit City started pushing HDTV's that only meet 720P, not 1080I. Anyone have one of these? Is it worth saving a few bucks? I had always thought that 720P was better than 1080I, but now it sounds like they have 1080P, which should be better than both.

Geoff,
I am with you. I have a 55" rear projection tv. It is HD but looks like shit compared to the new LCD and Plasma televisions. I am currently looking to upgrade in the living room from an old school 32" tube television to a 36-40" LCD.

The vast majority of HDTVs (like most DLP, LCD, Plasma in the past couple years) are and have been 720p. The only reason retailers advertise it now is because of the 1080p thing. To put the difference in perspective, to tell the difference between a 1080p and 720p 60" TV you'd need to sit about 8 feet away. And of course you'd need content in 1080p, of which there is no current aerial broadcast.

Most people won't sit nearly that close, or have rooms where viewing distances range from 8-25 feet.
