4.10 Install HELP!!

I recently purchased a used (2500 miles) 4.10 gear for my n/a Mach 1.

I have been speaking with some local shops getting prices and one mentioned I will need a bearing kit?

Do you think at this mileage (25,000) I should have to get the bearing kit?

If so, where is a good place to buy one?

Also, what is a good price to expect to pay for INSTALLATION ONLY of a 4.10 gear. I will supply parts.

Anyone on this board want to do it?

Thanks,
Matt

Well Lidio quoted me at $500 for the whole job, parts and labor.

You got to figure the gear is near $200, the bearing kit is $80 so that leaves $200 for labor.

I have had 3 different places tell me between $150 and $200 and the guys on ModularFords.com have payed $150 for install.

Not trying to be a dick at all, but just letting you know where I am coming from.

IMO, with only 25k on the car, you could properly remove the bearing from the pinion gear and reuse it. Worst case you could get a new inner bearing and race for the pinion gear. You need to get a shim kit,I would atleast see if the stock shims would work. Alot of times if its a ford motorsport gear the stock shims will put your back lash right where it needs to be.

Not sure who would install a gear and not set it up???? Kind of lost on that honestly. IMO $150 is a common price on an install for just the labor.

i think i paid around 300 for livernois to do it. I would pay the money to have Sean, Livernois, Alternative, Victory, or another repuatable company do it or you're gonna risk blowin up the rear end for what, $150??? just not worth it to half ass it when it's not gonna kill the check book. just my opinion but i had a 4.10 put in my 03 and i had no problem dishing out the money knowing it was gonna be done correctly the first time.

first off, i would not even consider reusing the old bearings. I promise, it will fail. bearing kit with bearings alone (not including axle bearings or axle seals) is about 100 bucks. add pinion shims, adjustable side shims(which are crap), marking compound, new pinion nut, loctite, ring gear bolts, cover gasket it jumps to 120-140 depending on the bearings, timken or some Chinese ones(one again, not even worth installing.) second, you want someone to install your parts, that cool, but its your baby. if you can find some one to do it, which in this economy is not to hard, liability and breakage is all on you.
third, a USED gear is virtually impossible to change the pattern on, so all you can do is match the original pinion shim thickness, set the backlash and roll a pattern, afterwards changing pinion depth make no difference on the pattern. so good luck on getting it set up right. Fourth-lots of manufacturers of 8.8 gears. some are absolute crap. you get what you pay for. Fifth-to answer orangejuiced86 comments, I have disassembled many differentials that were assembled by some VERY reputable shops, just to find assembly errors. some people will only use a impact for assembly-nice work. lots of so called experts out there. I commented last week on a shop I worked at in the early 80's that back then charged 100 bucks just to replace a pinion seal. Genius.
so just how did they put 2500 miles on that gear anyways? 1/4 mile at a time?
I wish you luck, but most of the time you get what you pay for.

IT can be extremly time consuming to get a gea that is used Back on the pattern it was on. In reality it takes about double the time. You may even need to change the pinion shim to bring the setup to where it was. it is a giant PITA.

Yes, get it done by a good place. I paid less than 200 for a guy to do it who I thought was good at his home buissness and it blew up 6 months later...He did not properly torque the ring gear bolts and failed to use loctite. It blew up and I got it redone for 500 thats with a new set of gears and clutch rebuild pack and new timken bearings.

So get it done by a good shop for the not lowest price.

Dont save money for cheap work, save money with good shop relations.

I need it done as well but have a hard time trusting people with my ride. I'll look around for a while before I do it. I will pay the extra money though to get it done right the first time!

Dropped her off at Lidio's about 15 minutes ago. They might be done tonight! Also having the car flashed :)

I will report how they feel!
