351w oil pressure issue at running temp.

Good luck. It may be In your best Intrest to pull the engine and check the bearings. Make sure they are good and the oil pump or pick up tube Is not loose. I think you will find the guy lied to you and the bearings are smoked.....I hope I'm wrong.

I got a message from the previous owner this morning. he states the crank has been cut. 010 and he had good oil flow up top when he was adjusting the rockers. amcar supplied the bearings to match the work they did. he said they didn't replace the cam bearings as the journals on the old cam were in perfect condition. as for the pump, he replaced it with a standard melling with a Ford motorsport pick-up and pan to fit a 351 in a fox. I have replaced the k&n with a wix filter and see maybe 2psi more at hot idol. Im gonna give a fm1a a shot after work just to rule out all the easy fixes. I'm also looking for a good autometer sport comp oil pressure gauge as I have been using one I baught out of a Doug Herbert catalog. I think it is a pro car brand and not to sure about the quality. if anybody has one laying around let me know what ya want for it and ill see what I can scrape up.

You are not going to pick up anymore psi between a wix and fl1a ford filter. Can someone correct me if I am wrong. Is losing 50 psi when warm normal with a bearing issue, seems like a lot to me?

^^^ That Is my thought also. Who did the assembly work on It ? I honestly think the last owner lied to you.

the previous owner assembled it, he works at local company that specializes in production performance vehicles. based on the short time spent with him during the purchase of the car he seemed to have reputable knowledge on the subject. again I can only take him for his word at this time but in his defence he was open with me about a couple hidden flaws with the body and suspention. if I get a day where its not raining this week I'm gonna bring her up to temp an pull a valve cover to see the flow if any with my own eyes. I'm also trying to pick up a 2 5/8 sport comp oil pressure gauge to eliminate the questionable quality of mine.

why such thick oil? run some 10w or even 5w, bet your pressure goes up

when I baught the car and originally noticed the pressure issue it was running 10w30. suspecting possible bearing ware I changed out to 20w50 in attempt to make up for excessive clearance. I did notice higher pressure at cold temp but pretty much the same low pressure at running temps.

put a autometer pressure gauge in her today and the needle never went below 9psi@1000rpm. I still feel its a little low but satisfied its so close to the 10psi/1000rpm rule of thumb. anyone have pro vs. con on running a high volume oil pump on a street car?

A little low? My car cold is 60 warm 45 psi at 1200. 9 PSI I would not run it still. There is a issue fix it before you tear things up. I would be knocking on the sellers front door asking for some type of paper work on this rebuild

If shes that loose I see no problem with running a hivol pump, Its when there tight you dont wanna run one it takes out the distributor gears or twists up the oil pump drive rods

At least on a 302, a HV oil pump will not fit a stock oil pan without clearance (hammer) or changing the pan. I went the HV pump route, and it didn't fit - talked myself out of a $400 canton 8-quart pan, and exchanged the HV pump for a stock pump. HV not needed for the 302 I built. If I remember correctly, you need a minimum 7" deep fwd. sump to fit the HV pump. The stock front sump is not deep enough, and without a hammer or machining the oil pump cap for countersunk screws for extra clearance, the HV pump will not fit. If you get a HV pump, you should get a new pan and pickup (which aren't cheap) unless you can find something used? You will need the deeper sumps for two reasons fit the pump and more capacity. Depending on your power band, the HV units can empty the pan quickly at high RPM.

Plus I don't see oil pressure changing much at idle with the HV pump (only higher RPM), I would stick with the stock pump unless you are into the high RPM range more than often.

A high volume pump is a bandaid for loose bearing clearances. If you are at 9psi@1000 when warm you could be in trouble if the oil gets hot. You could have an underperforming pump but it's most likely bad bearing clearances, i.e. too loose. I measure all my clearances before assembly to know where I am at.
Even with a high volume pump, you still do not guarantee good oil pressure at the rods if the main clearances are loose, especially if side clearance and radial clearance are both high. You also could be losing oil pressure from loose lifters.

I'm gonna pull the engine hopefully within the next 2-3 weeks. check clearance and hopefully no cracks in the web. if I learned anything out of this it to bring my own gauges when buying a used car.

Good thing is that aside from the time suck, it's only a couple hundred on the high end to fix it if the clearances are out. Got good micrometers?

after I pull it I'm gonna try and get it up to amcar or another machine shop. after my last move I ended up with almost no tools. but it probly wont happen for a month or so.

Keep us posted on what you find. If the clearances seem OK, start looking for a cracked web. They can bleed off pressure like crazy.
