351w & aod?

A friend of a friend has a 1970 Mustang with a 351W & AOD in it. He is having issues with the flex plate to the best of my knowledge. I guess the flex plate is shimmed back from the crank and now the starter will not engage properly and is ripping the teeth off the ring gear. I have not looked at the car. Has anyone done this and had a similar issue?

Bolting a AOD to a 1970 351w requires replacing the flywheel, and the correct plate between the block & trans.

Not sure of the year of the 351W. But, I had told them to call you but I couldn't find your number to give to them. Figured they could find it on the internet pretty quickly.

The aod flywheel has a slightly different off set, and you have to watch the counter weight (28oz for pre 85 engines), and the block plate positions the starter in the exact location it needs to be.... sticks & auto use different starter.
They sell complete conversion kits for this exact swap for a little under 600, which includes the flywheel, crossmember, mount, tv cable & adapters, shift linkage conversions, block plate & inspection cover, pig tail for neutral & back up lights, speedo gears, slip yoke.

This is a dumb question we had a problem like this on a Chevy trans and guess what the flywheel was installed backwards guy bought 2 new high dollar starters before we discovered the deal

Thats not really possible unless you leave a few bolts out.... or drill out the holes.... the pattern on the flywheel bolt holes are staggered on most flywheels to prevent improper indexing.
