2013 Tigers Thread

I hate people who are like "my teams are the Yankees, Raven's, Duke, Red Wings, and the Heat", lol how convenient and douchey.l

Lol. Most people hate duke. Don't know of too many duke bandwagoneers

But I've been a fan since the days of bobby Hurley and Christian Laetner. Hurley was a great PG. too bad his nba career didn't pan out due to his bike accident. That 92 championship game was classic ;)

I was just using Duke as an example in that list about the people who coincidentally are "fans" of only top tier teams who are consistently winners. You could replace Duke with North Carolina or Syracuse in that list if its more realistic to you, but the point I was trying to make remains the same. :icon_bigg

Yeah the 92 Championship game's final minutes weren't ideal. Kinda the same situation Michigan is in this year in my opinion, too many young players being counted on in key spots who just don't have enough big game experience. For example Stauskas' and GR3's Big Ten game inconsistency, and La Vert's inability to foul at the end of that Wisconsin game. All are problems directly related to being freshman and lacking experience in my opinion.

Growing up in the 70's, all the local teams sucked. All my friends from school had favorite teams aside from the big 4 teams here in Detroit. My favorites were the San Diego Padres, the New England Patriots, the New York Islanders and the Portland Trail Blazers. I still have a casual interest in those teams. I'm not real big on pro hoops anymore, but I love the other 3 sports.

As for games on TV, I guess MLB Network will televise 13 Tiger games this spring. Some are live and some are tape delayed. Tomorrows game against Toronto will be tape delayed until midnight. I'll try to remember to TVR it.

Nice, just set my DVR.
I still really enjoy NBA basketball, but I pretty much only watch Pistons games (all of them, I like seeing our young guys develop and I like torturing myself as well).
I'll watch some other matchups across the league, but not many until playoffs start up. I really think the way the games are refereed and the blatant favoritism shown to certain players has really made the game worse though as a whole. Depending on the team someone is on and the name on their jersey the game is called differently for them and I think that's complete bullshit. A foul is a foul, a walk is a walk, I don't care who the fuck you are or who you play for. Honestly I think the game would be better if the league allowed a little bit more contact before calling a foul, that would take away some of these "phantom fouls", but that slows down the game and Stern wants high scoring games with less emphasis on defense. So that won't happen anytime soon, and probably not even when Stern is gone in about a year either.

Sorry didn't mean to derail your thread. We'll catch up in the other college hoops thread :)

Yeah its cool man. This thread won't really get goin til probably April anyhow, until that point when we have Tigers games on nearly everyday I'm down to discuss anything sports related in here, especially my beloved Pistons, even though 75% of "Pistons fans" in this area seem to have jumped ship since 2008-09. Pretty funny to me seeing as how people keep up their Lions obsession year after year and the Pistons gave us a LOT more than the Lions ever have. NBA title in 04, Finals appearance in 05 (shoulda won), and 6 straight Conference Finals runs, but judging from peoples support around here you would think we were in the NBA's toilet since the end of the Bad Boy's era. :shake:

thinking that's no that they don't care about pistons, but rather football is more popular then basketball. So even if the product is worse, people enjoy football more.

kinda like the wings. unless you follow them, you still wouldn't know that hockey has resumed their season

I just find it funny how people are so quick to forget what the Pistons did for these fans yet they blindly follow the Lions no matter what. I know the old saying "football is king", but I just find it interesting. Lions have given their fanbase next to nothing, and I'd be shocked if they won 7 games this year as well.

Anyhow, as far as Tigers news, we took a beating from Toronto yesterday in spring ball, 10 - 3 loss. Hill, Robowski, and Mercedes got lit up for all 10 of Toronto's runs. Mercedes is the only one of these guys that I recognized.

Good things I took from the game was that Prince and Miggy each hit a long homerun, Jackson was making great contact driving 2 balls out to the warning track (robbed of a sure double by a very nice catch in centerfield on the first one), and Torii got a double down the right field line as well.
Bruce Rondon also threw an inning, gave up a hit and a walk, but also recorded 2 K's with runners on 2nd and 3rd to get out of the inning with no damage being done on the scoreboard.
Man, I'm ready for opening day lol

Maybe its just because I haven't seen him recently, but Miggy looks a little bit slimmer to me.

Castellanos hit a 2 run homer to right center off Papelbon and Miggy also hit a MASSIVE 3 run homer to left... WAY OUT, almost to the parking lot looked like. The Philly announcers said probably the longest homer they ever saw hit at that ballpark. Absolutely CRUSHED. I suggest you guys go watch that replay on MLB.com or somethin.
Yeah its just spring ball, but it was still good to see something from Nick and a Miggy homer is always great. Plus I'm a baseball addict so I'm excited lol

Yeah it's only spring ball, but JV started the game today going 3 innings scoreless, no hits, no walks, and 3 K's. Looked like the typical sharp JV for sure.

As far as the offense goes Garcia when 2 for 4 and hit an opposite field 2 run homer to right, Prince went 2 for 3, and Dirks went 1 for 3. Those were the only real highlights of the game to me offensively for any of our players likely to get significant time with the MLB club this year.

So who's getting opening day tickets today? I never do opening day personally, but I know a lot of people get into it. Ticket prices are just too inflated for opening day in my opinion so I don't buy for mainly that reason.

Best opening day for me was the year Bo fired Ernie. We couldn't scalp any tickets, so we sat in the van with a cooler of beer,
listening to Ernie call the Reds and Padres.

Yeah man I feel that. You will be able to get a lot for them probably on Stub Hub I bet, then the next home series tickets will be 1/3 of the price.
People just pay a lot extra because it's an "event" not just a Tiger's game. I guess if I wanted to go downtown and drink all day I might be more tempted to go.

Nice. Opening day last year was a pretty badass game against the Red Sox. Then the wheels fell off our team for a couple months after that first series.

Not sure if anyone caught the Tigers game today, but Porcello looked razor sharp. He really pitched well (4 innings 6 k's). Albuquerque and Villarreal each went 1 inning with 3k's each. I also really enjoyed the interview with Torii Hunter, what a character. He'll be a great addition for our team.
