Just like the classic cars it features, it appears The North Gratiot Car Cruise's rocky start is a thing of the past.

Rex Beasaw, Motor City Street Rodders Car Club president and a cruise organizer, said he was happy with the turnout of last Wednesday's meeting at Dimitri's Restaurant.

"It looks like we'll raise enough money," he said.

Beasaw said there are enough monetary commitments to continue on with the event and is pleased with the amount of enthusiasm received for the cruise.

This is the seventh year for the cruise, which because of lack of support was on hiatus last year.

Beasaw said they need to raise a minimum of $10,000, all of which will be donated to Macomb County K-9 programs. Beasaw and fellow cruise planner Ken Novik are both shooting to raise $20,000.

One business that has made a commitment to help raise money for the K-9 program is Total Health Systems.

"We thought it would be good to do something local," Marketing Director Ann Gallagher said. She said the Clinton Township-based company is happy to help raise money for the cruise.

The business is kicking off its fund-raising efforts during the grand opening of their new location on 23 Mile Road in Chesterfield Township. The event, which is being catered by CranksL Catering, will feature K-9 unit demonstrations. The Chesterfield Fire Department will have a set up and will also feature an area for parents to have child identification cards made. The grand opening and fund-raising event is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 28.

Gallagher said after the event, they have nearly two months to continuing raising money for the cruise.

Beasaw said individuals who want to support the cruise can donate money at various locations throughout the community by purchasing a paw. He said some banks and restaurants are already on board and any interested businesses can participate.

Novik said he is organizing the parade, which will take place on cruise day, Aug 24. He said he's even trying to see if a fly-by can be arranged from Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

Another cruise meeting is planned for 7 p.m. on June 11 at Dimitri's Restaurant, 50875 Gratiot, in Chesterfield Township. It will include more information about the paw fund-raising effort, the cruise and sponsorship information.
