My buddy has a 2005 f-150 with the 5.4 in it. His description is when he pulls up to a light the truck stalls! So stalls at idle but runs fine otherwise. He called me last night and was telling me the car is at the dealer. They replaced the cam angle sensors to fix the issue. They then told him he had shavings in his oil and wanted $5-6000 for a reman motor. I said something didn't sound right but I would have to look into it. Could the motor be bad? I know this is vague but my friend is not to auto savvy and this is all the info. I could get.

Normally if there metal shavings in your oil that is a sign of something is going wrong big time. I couldn't tell what it is. I surprised that thing running.

Metal shavings arn't normal ?????????? :icon_lol: I was just looking for some insight as to common issues with that motor. Maybe it is something simplier then a motor swap!!

be carefull with that... Had a few people I know personally have work done at a few dealers (names not to be mentioned) and they tried selling them engines when all the trucks needed was timing chains and guides.

They said it was "knocking"... This was as of resent like two weeks ago.

Yeah I figured when I read this and he said that there where shavings in the oil pan that didn't sound right. And the guy was still driving it to boot. You are right that is probably something like that. Don't have him buy a new engine X2. +1 good post.

I'm not saying the engine isn't bad, but I would personally hold off and have a second opinion from a trusted mechanic or able person before making such a purchase.

The issue is he is down in Florida. Anyways, I just spoke with him and he went out and leased an Mercedes E550 so he doesn't care about this truck! I am going to try to buy it from him! I am just a little worried about the motor! I wonder if it would make the drive back.

If there was metal shavings in the oil pan, that is a sign of no oil, so check that out if you get it.

I think the whole shavings in the pan is b.s.

IAC??? TPS sensor? how does the vehicle idle? how many miles on the motor

more details please.....

I kinda thougt the same thing. I think they replaced his cam phasers. Although I cannot get him to verify this.

Check the vac line for hair line cracks. I have that issue with my navigator it would stall while idling and have a slight hesitation and ruff idling

Now my buddy will not call me back. I am not sure what's up with this but I will check the vac lines if I every see it.

So I just spoke with him. He parked it . It still stalls at idle. He basically told me to get it out of his yard. We are going down to florida in april so I figured I would drive it back. Worst case I will have it shipped. I got some quotes and it is like $1000 to ship it from florida to here. I may try to drive it.

The Motor is Prob Junk.
The 5.4 3v engine is common for VCT and Cam Phaser/trigger Problems that are caused by low oil pressure. once those symptoms occur its usually to late.

You could fix the Engine, but once you factor in Cost of all the parts you need to replace and downtime you could just get a used engine that will most likely have the same problem!

So what is the solution to the problem? Do you think the motor will make a 1400 mile trip if that is whats wrong?
