2003 Pontiac Grand Am: No start.

Car just wouldn’t start one day. I check fuel and spark (both there). I had the car towed to the local garage. Garage couldn’t find anything. He said my SECURITY light was blinking.

My question: Is there any way to disable the Theft/Security system on GM cars?

Its probably the hall-effect piece in the ignition cylinder. It can't be bypassed.
I would take it to the dealer, i think there might have been a recall on them for the switch.

Yes, you can disable it on GM cars. You can have VATS disabled if you have it tuned. Anyone with an HP Tuners module can do it, but it costs $100 for the license.

no crank or no start?
Alot of vehicles won't even crank with security enabled now

yes, but first, put a charger on the car on low, then turn the key on for 10 minutes(charger is to keep the voltage above 12v, this is called theft relearn)


if it then starts, yeah, likely needs the lock cylinder, not the switch

not too hard to replace, but the cylinder needs to be coded to the key(just tumblers, the cylinder from the dealer should come with everything needed)

So to replace the key lock assembly, I have to order it from the dealship?

yeah, dealer, plus it's not cheap. over $100 for the last one i replaced

I had the same symptoms as the original poster. It was a malfunctioning security bypass for a remote start system in a 2003 Suburban. No crank and had the security light on. Unfortunately this happened to me on the side of the freeway in BFE, Pennsylvania. :lol: Had to get towed to the dealership the next business day. They removed the remote start and everything was good again.
