I have a 2002 Mercury Cougar. She's been to the shop to be fixed several times the last few months because I have this check engine light that won't go away.
First time I was told it was the thermostat. I replaced that myself and within a day the light was back on. (I had disconnected the battery to get to the thermostat which is what cleared the code initially).
Second time, I was told it was fixed as the light "wouldn't come on" because they had disconnected the battery but not connected those dots.
Third time, I was told it needed a new sensor, they replaced that.
Well, I just got this baby back and not only did the light come back on, but now my temperature gauge is no longer working.
I called the guy who dealt with it at the shop and he told me that it must be my thermostat, I likely screwed up or put in a bad one and that the bad thermostat will cause the temp gauge not to work.
I've had a bad thermostat before in my mustang that was bad out of the packaging, so that idea isn't too far fetched... but as far as the thermostat causing my temp gauge to fail? I'm an idiot, but I'm not that much of an idiot.
I can only assume that when the car was being worked on the temp gauge was disconnected and never properly hooked back up. Does anyone know where to locate the place where the gauge is actually hooked up? It should be electronic not mechanical so I'm a little nervous maybe the part they replaced is bad and that isn't reading the temp gauge.... I have no clue but I don't have the money to take it somewhere else and get dicked around.
I've been searching on the internet but can't find what I'm looking for... so since this is a car club, I thought maybe someone would know.
Thanks!
