2002 Explorer Coolant issue

My dad's 2002 Explorer with the 4.6 is having overheating issues. I know I can test for head gasket issues with my compression tester but is there anyway I can test for intake gasket issues? I know the Ford 4.6 and 5.4 are really susceptible to this. I'm 99% sure its the intake gaskets (like on my Grand Marquis, my brothers Grand Marquis, and our old '97 F-150 but I don't' want to do the work just to put it back together and find out its the head gaskets. Any advice? I have MOST basic tools and a compression tester. What can I accomplish?

How long does it take to overheat?

Are you just going off the cage or are you seeing steam? If its just going by the gauge and depending on miles it very well could be a coolant temp sensor
