2001 Grand am wont shift

Buddy of mine had this happen in his GA, i think same year. For whatever reason, if the tranny is cold, it won't go anywhere. I haven't figured out the problem, but if he sits in gear with the motor reved (~3-4k) it'll start moving after a couple minutes after the tranny gets hot.

Anyone think if a torque converter failed it'd do this?
 
valve body gaskets and some o-rings are a common failure piece on on 4t40-e's usually they dont just go bad though, just buy a rebuild kit for go through it, there's not much to those transmissions (or just buy a junked manual car and convert it :D )
 
need more details, you say the shifter moves, but the vehicle does not. does it roll or can it be pushed?
different transmissions have different common problems.
first identify which transmission it has. i assume we are talking automatic?
