i havent done a thing to research this yet but one of my jeeps is tough to get out of 4wd, the lever moves smoothly but it just doesnt pop out of gear for a long time.
i noticed that t he 4wd light in the dash doesnt come on either when i put it in 4wd but its definitely working.

any ideas?

my girls moms jeep does it too... except hers wont come out at all... she only drives it to work a couple miles away so she doesnt worry about it but it would be nice if it worked properly

still havent done anything with it but it is kinda annoying. its my wifes jeep so she gets worried when stuff doesnt work correctly.

any other help is appreciated.

Vacuum disconnect on the front axle? I don't know if Cherokee's have this, but it is the problem 100% of the time on Wranglers before 97.

no vac op system here.

the light in the dash turned out to be the 2 wire switch in the top of the transfer case. $32 from dealer. i also changed the transfer case fluid in both my jeeps for good measure, i hope it helps with this one not coming out of 4wd. we'll see tomorrow with all the snow.

Front axle, back side, by the passenger tire. Look for a vacuum diaphram with some vacuum lines connected to it. They usually start to stick in cold weather, then fail completely.

just an update, the fluid change fixed the 4 wheel problem. i also changed it in my other one and it also helped that one.

I thought all the 99 up were full time 4x4to a degree - Quadratrac and the other one I can't remember off the top of my head
