1K$ to spend on family car project.

Hey Motown,

I have been a lurker for a number of years, finally posting. I have a 2.5 year old son and he is loving all things cars. So, I thought it would be fun to start a car project with him. I have tools, skills, and a work space. I am looking for something in the 1K$ range to pick up and start working on. Time line is not super critical, just want to get him learning and I want to have fun as well. I am open to all makes and models, something looking for a good home. What do we have out there folks?

There is an SVO Fox Body Mustang on Craigslist, it's been for sale for a while. The body is rough in spots but it could be cool. The guys asking $1700. I think that'd be cool start to restore or do something crazy like transplant an Ecoboost 3.5L 2.7L or easily the 2.3L

Maybe start with a gocart??? Not kidding. The budget sounds right and it gets a steering wheel in his hands inside of a decade. Goodluck sounds fun either way!

Edit. you can make a really fast one and detune it for him or you can buy one for yourself and try to keep up with him. The best drivers in the world started in a go-kart.

First, welcome themainphrame, to Motown Muscle!

I'm with Denny on this one. Starting out with a go-cart would be a
great "learning curve" for your son, yet still be fun for you.

This is what I did with my sons. In any event, whatever you choose,
it will be great, because it'll be time well spent with your son!

C4 gocart gets my thumbs up!! Put some 35's on it for ground clearance. Remove all body parts. Sweeeet!

This is great! Thank you for the responses. I found a sweet project, I will post updates tonight and pics. It's not a school bus, but my son is calling it Miss Fritter, so it might have to stay. I love this community, truly.

I love this idea as well. I saw one turboing around Birmingham the other day. A little better than the Roadkill cart, much worse than Leroy...

OK, the big reveal, lol. 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis. 124K ish. 5.0 4 speed auto 8.8 rear. I will update my profile with pics and start a new thread. Thank you for the suggestions!
