1993 Cobra Engine Questions

Hi folks, I'm in the process of doing a 4-cyl conversion on a '90 coupe. I've got a line on a brand new, zero-mile 1993 Cobra motor minus the intake which isn't a problem since I plan on installing a tubular gt40 anyway. I'm wondering do the 1993 Cobras have hypereutectic pistons? I'm under the impression that they do but would like to make sure. Also, I would want to put in an aftermarket cam. I'm wondering what would be a good choice cam for a basically stock motor with a tubular gt40 intake? Finally, what is a fair price to pay for a new motor sans intake? I don't imagine many of them exist. Thanks in advance folks any input is appreciated as I'm a mod motor guy myself and this is all new to me.

I don't think they have the forged pistons that stopped in 92 ( not 100% on that) I would put a comp cam in it though

You will find hypereutectics in it if its a 93. Not sure what your goal is with the car but if its a cobra motor leave the cam and just put the GT-40 intake back on it since it has GT40 heads as well. I had a stock cobra motor going 12's back in the day.

Thanks for the replies thus far. Goal for the car is to make it a nice, reliable cruiser. I'm not building a race car by any means.

I understand that the Cobra came with a different cam from the factory. It would be easier to just leave it be but I was thinging of putting in a letter cam mainly for the sound lol.

12's with a stock motor is impressive! What was the setup?

Not really impressive to be honest. With GT-40 heads, intake, 24lb injectors,77proM meter,h-pipe that was common to run 12's with a stick and a 3.73 gear.

E-cam seemed to be a little bit more for them, check into that...It's all Ford Racing parts, so I am sure there is info on it if you call the tech line they can probably give you guidance on their parts and what work together, etc.
Keep in mind that it also has 1.7 rockers, so that may change your cam ideas too unless you change rockers. They have hyper pistons too.
Cobra intake is the same as a GT40 I believe, the difference being one is a solid chunk (Cobra) and one is tubular (GT-40)...I think they're both basically the same as far as flow and runner detail.

E-303 was a common cam and you can find them cheap for a slight rumble if that is all you want anyway but I think you would be happy with some flowmasters and keep that complete cobra motor stock. If you do a cam swap go for a custom grind Lunati or find a wolverine 1087 cam.

Good info guys, keep it coming!

E-303 is what I had in mind, would I need to change rockers? If so, I will keep the stock cam. I'm trying to KISS (keep it short & simple). Not really interested in custom cams, just after some sound and trying to keep costs down.

I had a B cam with 1.7 rockers and GT 40 heads in a carbd car and it went low 12's with an auto. Sounded good too, better than teh E in my opinion. But either cam would work.

E cam would be the way to go it has a good sounding idle to it and they perform pretty good with near stock components. My dad has a e7te headed stock bore 302 that makes 300 wheel the only non stock parts on the engine are headers intake manifold and an e cam. As for the intake manifolds if I'm not mistaken the only difference between a cobra and a gt-40 is the tubular design and gt-40's can't be ported/gasket matched.

With a b or e cam is it as simple as swapping the cam out or does it require different springs, retainers and rockers?

Simple cam swap you don't have to replace everything. And if your looking for more of the lopey idle a b cam isn't the way to go I was told by a ford racing tech at autorama a couple years that b cams make more power with stock heads and intake but it's a smoother idle.

b cam is way more lopey than an E cam, Ive had both, just look at the specs.

listen to the cars on youtube, I believe there are a slew of E vs B cam vids

man...i loved my wolverine 1087 cam. Smoked72 is the one that got me to use it on my car...wicked sounding...with good performance.

I wish i would have had a blower back then!
As for better cams...I had the b cam and e cam...I personally had better performance with the b cam

there was one of those for sale on here not too long ago, it was all wrong for my turbo setup though. Ive seen a bunch of people spray their cars with the B cam and gt40 heads and make really good power.

I have a E cam and it's very reliable. Also have 170 heads, cobra intake, 1.6 rockers, shorty's, pulley's, stock everything else. Car made 306hp/338tq RWHP. I also have 3:55 gears, t5. The cobra motors come with 1.7 rockers, whick will give you a 510 lift. The stock 93 pistons are only setup for about 512 lift. I went 13.2? this past fall. I have a stock tire and am a pretty crappy driver. Someone with tires and know how to drive could easily run 12's with this setup.

yeah...add some gear and a sticky tire and you should go 12's pretty easy.

Dom, any sound clips of the Wolverine?

Man, I should have made this a poll lol. Seems like it's a 50-50 split between b and e. Now I'm even more confused then I was when I started this thread lol.
