My grandfather build a 1936 Mercedes Marlene kit car back in 88', it's based off a 74' Mustang II. It's engine is the Mustang II's 2.8 V6. He replaced the fiber timing gears with the aluminum gears when he built the car but now it's having problems. It started making this grinding noise that got louder as it warmed up. We took the timing cover off and it seems the cam gear has walked backwards about four thousandths. I don't know crap about these engines and was wondering if anyone here does. I really need to know what is supposed to stop the cam from walking backwards. It has a thrust plate that stops it from coming forward, my only guess is that the gear hub rides on the front side of the thrust plate and maybe it's worn down now.
Any help?
