This has been a long term, on again, off again project that I just have to get done. I bought the body for $400 when my oldest son was in junior high. He's now an electrical engineer for Harmon Kardon. That's how long its been hanging around. Between working way to much, a side business, and my street car that always to get first dibs, it doesn't get much attention. Anyway, my intention is to have it built far enough to put an ORV tag on it and be able to trail ride it by next spring. Initially it will be an almost stock 1600 air cooled that I will be building over the winter. Eventually it will either be a big turbo air cooled, or possibly a GM ecotec, or a TDI diesel vw. It also has a 094 bus trans, and roughly 16" of wheel travel at each corner with racerunner coilovers. So next is a lot more cage work, suspension work, and enough electrical and mechanicals to make it trail worthy. After that winter projects to finish it up. I am by no means a fabricator. But can struggle through it. Anyways, here's some pics and I will try to update it as it slowly moves along.

That is insane travel! If you want a 2007cc turbo VW built with top of the line parts, get ahold of me. I drag raced it all day today, 12 passes without a hickup but I am looking to swap in a different setup.

Thanks for the comments. Yea, Horsepower is useless offroad without the suspension setup to handle the terrain. That motor definitely sounds really interesting.

Thought I would give some updates. I've made some good progress with the cage. Probably around 80% done. I wasn't happy with the position of the front axle beam. At full turn the tires rubbed on the inner wheel wells. So I cut off the factory mount and moved the whole thing forward 7". It set the project back a bit. But needed to be done. Some other projects have gotten in front of this so it will probably be a couple months before I'm back on it.
