$120 to change a light bulb on a GMC?

I have a 2010 Acadia and one of the front running/turn signal lights is burned out. The dealership tells me it's $120 because they have to remove the front bumper. Are you kidding me?
I think I can do it after I remove the left front tire and wheelwell liner. I took out the screws but still couldn't reach so I may have to actually remove the tire and liner. Anyone else have a better idea?

I had to remove the bumper to change the bulb on my Acura and it wasnt hard at all. Just the standard plastic push-clips and it slid right off.

yeap..the better idea is to pull the front cover loose on the side you need to change. upper clips and then fender liner clips/ remove wheel and slide cover off to the side. remove mount plate that holds HL in and then you can get to it.

in other words...pull off the front cover.

I just did the bulbs in my G35 and had to pull the bumper. Glad I'm not the only one

Anyway, it's probably quicker to do that than to mess w/getting the fender liners back in place. Those things can be a PITA, the bumper is just a few clips and screws and you're done

It has 49K on it already, warrenty covers the first 30 or 36K. This service department I'm not big on anyway, last time we had our '08 in their shop the mechanic left his tool box in the back of it.

Doggone Mazda CX9 owner down the street quoted $300 by dealer to change one headlamp bulb!!!!! And yeah the complete front bumper cover and several other pieces had to be removed to access the bulb(s). And.........one version of bulb was $100 a bulb @ Autozone or $80 on the interweb. Needless to say he only needed the $15 bulb(s). What a fucking design nightmare - I could strangle some design engineers. Nevermind, I'll take all of the CX9 headlamp replacements I can get, non-Zenon $135, Zenon $295 out the door.....LoL.

LOTS of newer cars are designed this way, if im not mistaken ford tells you to take the front passenger wheel off and inner fender well cover to change the bulb on a new fusion

If these service managers were smart they would have a light repair/trim guy do those types of repairs to keep their customer base happy and the cost low. Theres no need for a $25+/hr ASE tech to be repacing bulbs and wipers :nono: Hell a properly trained LOF guy could do most of those things

Don't blame the design engineers. Blame: a) The design studio for the design of the facia. b) The government for front crash regulations as well as criteria of the size/shape of headlight. c) The customer who demands 8,000,000 standard features in their compact car (and they also want it to get 100mpg, weigh 1500lbs, but get 5 star crash ratings on all tests with an MSRP under $12,000.)

Amen!

I love the sticker shock some people get when shopping for a new car. Sir you are driving a 10yr old car, 90% of the safety and convince OPTIONS back then are standard today.

they just dont want us working on are cars anymore

remember, this is a car forum, with car guys, who can do a lot of misc. repairs. the general public, as a rule, shouldn't be allowed to open the hood. hell, the majority of independents have trouble working on these cars. there's a multi-billion dollar repair business that the manufacturers are damn well gonna get an increased market share of.

don't forget to thank the worlds biggest busybody, Ralph Nader, for a lot of this......

This is true on the Acadia. I was a Saturn tech and changed bulbs on the outlook..its not very hard to do though . And definatley not worth 100+ for labor.

Because they were charging mechanical labor rates o n a job their bodyshop should be doing to keep costs down.... 1.5 hour job at 80 per hour mechanical vs 1.5 at 44 per hour.......

Crap is designed for ease of assembly, fuck service. And that legislation excuse, give me a break. Serviceability is tossed out the window to reduce labor costs during vehicle assembly.

Oh and there will always be independants working on vehicles. They may not be able to do everything the dealer can, but they will be repairing vehicles. Good ones and hacks. It's the hacks that I hate. Fuck if you're gonna do a job, do it right or GTFO.
