not sure whats going on here, i got in a 02 blazer zr2 with 80k and the thing just wont crank. Everything works when you turn the key to "ON" but when you go to start all the lights go out in the display and you hear nothing from the starter. There is a check engine light also. Anyone know how to go about troubleshooting this?

check engine light is always on til running.
power at the starter? power at the solenoid during crank?

is it in park? try starting in neutral, and hold the key to start and WITH YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKE move the shifter through the gears

check your grounds...and the ground strap on back of engine...my brothers had that problem and it was the ground cable was cracked bad connection..

Buddy has the identical truck (120k miles)with identical problem....He replaced his starter and cranks wright up

Sounds like there is an excessive current draw when turned to crank. Clean the connections at the battery, check the battery, starter and clean connection at starter

If you just bought it check to see if someone didn't take the alarm all the way out. I've seen a few cars at auctions that were sold as non-runners because someone cut the alarm wires and took the remote but didn't hook the starter wire back up under the dash.

toss a battery in it. or swap in a known good battery. Sometimes the cells can developed intermitent open connections and go dead the minute you request alot of power.

I have also seen the starter motors burn up windings from being overcranked when those trucks hardstart in cold weather. Then it pulls like 500 amps to ground. Not pretty.
