01 silverado no forward gears in trans

Looking at purchasing an 01 silverado, has a 5.3, automatic and 2wd. (I believe that would make it a 4l60e trans??) Anyone know if its easier to just swap the trans out for another one or is its possibly something that's a common issue and fixable in the truck? It has no forward gears, reverse is fully operational without issues.

4l60e's are kind of hit or miss, some can take it some cant. I would plan to pull the trans and either rebuild or get a reman'd unit to use.

No forward movement in a 4l60e is not a common failure Check manual low. If it still has no movement and has reverse, the fwd friction are bad...probally a bad input drum & ring cut stator support...something you see on high mileage poorly maintained (as in never changing the trans fluid) vehicles.

Any easy test would be to put the transmission in D range and see if it will pull away. If it moves, more than likely has the foward sprag out of it. The single cage design is junk, and it usually tears up the inner race.
