Would you sell someone a classic car knowing that they were going to hack it up?

That is the question...

I have my 71 LeMans for sale...I don't need the money, it would be nice but I am thankfully not in that type of situation as a must-sell. I would keep it without a problem if it didn't.

This past weekend, a few people looked at it during the Woodward Dream Cruise. One guy looked at it top to bottom, said it was exactly what he wanted.

He told me he was going to use the back half for one car [a GTO], and the front for a wreck....

I turned down one buyer last year after I bought it [before I fixed it up] for the same reason.

My reasoning is that there are GTO clones and real ones everywhere already. Thats great - I was looking for a GTO before I found this, no regrets! Everyone said turn it into a GTO, I told them why bother - it looks great as-is.

51k miles, all original aside from paint/wheels, and has been on 3 stops of the last Hot Rod Power Tour 2009 [1200 miles or so to/from] without an issue, and working AC. Great car.

The car in question:

Would you sell it if you received an offer close to what you wanted regardless of where it ends up?

I am very hesitant to even deal with this individual on this basis....

I know I should take my personal thoughts out of it, since it could've happened anyway if he didn't tell me.

I would have a hard time letting a car that's in good shape be destroyed but it will be saving two others...

That's a tough choice my friend.

It may be silly, but I think cars have a soul. They may not be a living being, but they all have a life, a personality and a soul. I couldn't sell the car knowing that. There are enough '70-'72 LeMans sitting in the salvage yards already for parts, as well as aftermarket suppliers. Why kill a nice car?

Bump this!

Another reason why it pains me to see cash for clunkers killing C4 vettes etc...

It's a great looking car. If I had the money to buy it, I'd be interested. That's a nice cruiser/car show car in it's own right. Just curious, what engine (I'm assuming it's a 350-2V) and how many miles are on it?

think of it this way. if you really Needed the money you wouldnt care how it ended up as long as you got the cash. If you dont NEED to sell the car then you will debate about it how it ends up. A car is a car and you will get similar yet different feelings about a future car/project no doubt, but that shouldnt have any bearing on how your current situation is dealt with.

Very nice car, but with that said, I would have no problem selling it. Yeah, its rare and all, but seriously...when it comes down to it, its just a car. Thats why I had no problem selling my T/A. Its just metal and plastic.

Sell the car, get your money and dont look back. What if you sold it to someone who liked the car for what it was and wrecked it the next week? At least your not going to sell it to some kid who wants to throw 26's on it and fill the trunk with speakers.

sell it....if the person is paying your selling price, what's it matter? cause once you sell it you have no control over what they do anyway...i've sold 2 hotrods that were crashed within a week of me selling them...oh well

this looks alot like a thinly disguised for sale post in this market zero "common" cars are selling if you want to sell and he has the money whats the problem?

i would have zero problem selling the car

x2

Depends on the 'classic'. If it is a rare car, I might hesitate depending on the reasons I am selling. If it is a run of the mill car, go for it.

I'd sell that car you posted to him in a minute.

killing a car = killing a baby? lol wow, some guys take this stuff too seriously.

Honestly, what are u going to do? Make everyone who buys the car swear and write a contract that they wont let someone chop it up? So you do sell it to the "right" buyer, they cruise it for about 2 years, hit money trouble. Need to sell it ASAP....another person like this comes along and wants it for a project, they sell it. You cant control it.

If the car really has a soul, it then has a destiny right? Maybe u just dont want that destiny on your conscience so you are gonna pass on the possible sale, but if its meant for that car to get cut up, it will be.

In other words, i'd sell it.

Take the money and RUN!! Who cares what he does with it. You can now build another car from the money you get. So while he's tearing that one apart, you are resurecting another! :)

If you want to get rid of the car why would you care what the next guy does with it.

When I got my Cobra it was bone stock and the seller wanted me to promise it was going to stay that way forever. I said sure just to make him happy

i wouldnt, i believe the "dont crush em, restore em" phrase applies here. You either like owning cars for yourself or you really like the cars.

like others have said, there are plenty of parts cars available. I hate seeing nice cars get parted out and destroyed.

i dont like seeing cars hacked up, but once its out of my hands, its no longer any care of mine. I hate to sell cars, but its the next guys car, he can do whatever he wants out of it. if youre happy with the amount he'll pay you, take the money and run, go buy something else. Its a buyers market right now, you can get cool stuff cheap if you look.

I sold a mint (road race) car to a guy about 5 years ago and regret ever selling it to him.....

It was not even a classic, just a very clean 00 Integra Type R (one of 1350 in the country) and it was spotless. 20K miles in 5 years fully prepped for the track.

First he corked the motor on the dyno by leaving an adjustable cam gear loose 3 weeks after he bought it...Then the first time I saw it at Gingerman it was destroyed, dent in the hood from a cherry picker, side skirt ripped off, interior trashed.....

He ended up parting it out and trading it in on another car within less than a year. I still have guys tell me "I have your X part from your old car"

If you don't need the money and have to even question it don't sell it to be cut up!
