I did the hardwood laminate in my kitchen, dining room and living room myself. It was easy once you got a line started. The boards literally snap together. Just cut them to fit and away you go.

Have you looked into Pergo? http://www.pergo.com It will run you a shit ton less than hard wood, and still looks great. With the way homes are selling for right now, hardwood might not be a worthwhile investment.
My whole upstairs is hardwood under the carpet and the wife and I have put some thought into doing away with the carpet upstairs and refinishing the hardwood up there. (talk about a TON of work that is going to be) She also wants to do the Pergo laminate in our living room downstairs. I think my wife thinks we're made of money sometimes. :lol:

Ha Ha! I know how you feel there. I tore up carpet in the living room and found worn hardwood with a few holes. So I covered the holes before laying down the laminate. The kitchen however, had 3 layers of limoleum to remove. After all of the nails and staples I actually found hardwood there too. Worn as all get out, but it was there. It's not too bad, your floors should be fine under there if you have carpet and do not fall through any holes anywhere.82hatch said:
As long as the floor is level to start with the laminate lays right down easily. I went with the stuff from Sams, the thicker foam layer from Home Depot and a very expensive fine toothed sawblade for my compound mitre saw and finished all three rooms! Invest in a good blade as the hardwood laminate will eat them up. I started with a cheap blade and didn't even get half way through the first room and it was shot! After the floors are down (they float so there is a gap at the walls) just attach that corner bead molding to cover the gap and you are done! You will be amazed how nice they look and how easy it was to do. I had a friend help me with two rooms and finshed the last myself and it went quickly. Only took us a few hours to complete a room. Like I said the worst part are the first rows because those determine the lay of the floor compared to the room. My house was built in 1935 so nothing is very square and the first row had to be custom fit. After that standard size boards and away we went. Just use a chalk line to find the center of the room and measure and you are set with the first row of boards. Good luck.

pergo is nice because it's super easy to install, but it looks too fake to me. this laminate stuff that i used is nice because it's easy to install (clicks together, no subflooring) and it looks very much like real hardwood. the edges are even beveled so it feels like real hardwood under your feet.

I am getting ready to refinish my whole house real soon. The biggest pain is emptying the entire first floor and storing it. I refinish gymnasium floors on the side, but residential floors are a different animal. I would suggest hiring someone to do it for you. You can easily screw your floor up and wind up spending more money. Plus you have to rent all of the tools to do it.
Once they are done, refinished floors look awesome! Some of the fake ones look ok, but I don't think they compare to the real thing. I have a good friend of mine that could give you a quote if you're interested, just pm me...Mike

If you want a real hardwood floor done let me know. I'll come give you a quote. It would take about 2 days for something the size of an average livingroom & would be pre-finished so you wouldnt have to deal with the stink or dust of sanding & staining. The last one we did was on a 45 deg angle & looks awesome.
I would stay away from the laminate floors, when they get wet they do some crazy things... They act alot like wafer board.. You know what happens next.
