Why are some dealers ads full of it?

My dads in a market for a new Edge so he went to a local Ford dealer with an ad that reads
"$209 month Lease is for 36 months, based on A/Z plan pricing, 10.5k miles per year, includes all rebates to dealer including renewal. ZERO Down, First payment, plus tax, title and plate fees due at lease inception. Expires 08/"
My dads a returning lessee, Z plan, 10.5k miles, and they quoted him $270 month... They said the $209 is with $1000 down... My dad says no where in the ad does it say that and the sales guys says "all dealers do that"
Obviously it's a bait and switch!
How can they get away with this? Kinda like Art Van saying all there furniture is 80% off! Off of what? My couch was $5000, your telling me it used to be $25,000?
And yes, I did ask Matt for a quote and i gave the info to my pops.....

It's not "some dealers" it's all dealers :-( buying a new car is nothing but a headache and stress with all the games they play

1. You can't advertise tax in ads which is part of it.

2. Most have an asterisk (*) which spells out the ad. Some dealers don't included your inception costs (1st payment, tax on the rebate, plate and state fee's). Some even go as far as removing destination costs.

3. It's ALWAYS a super low mileage lease (10,500)

4. It's ALWAYS a super cheap vehicle (whichever package leases the best with the least options)

5. Lastly there may have been a mistake at the paper with the ad, they may have forgotten to add the small print. We've had that happen and the paper sends us a retraction letter.

You have to understand if we (dealers) didn't put in any small print and advertised the everything in bold type nobody would call. They would call the other guys because their ad "looks" cheaper. The sale doesn't start unless the phone rings. The difference between dealers (when dealing with any type of plan sale) is the service they provide.

I'd like to say my and Varsity's reputation say other wise.

A-plan FTMFW!

E-mail Trunk what you want. If he can't find one he orders it, calls you when it's in, and then delivers it to your house.

(Unless you order a Mustang and it gets stuck on the line during the month-long July shutdown. **cough**Rara**cough**)

Not really... I've bought a few new cars and had no problems with them...

Matt was courteous to deliver and hook me up on a free be or 2... But the decision belongs to my dad... He's making the payments.
Looks like he might drive the Mustang till october then lease a truck before they head to Florida for the winter.

I'll agree with Matt on this. Being employed at a motorcycle dealer for the last 16 years, I can tell you that the guys that advertise the lowest prices to get you in the door are the dealers that sell the most inventory. The management at my place has been using the "honest guy, quote the actual price over the phone and online" tactic.....and our sales figures are in the tank. All the potential customer hears is the number. So our guy says "$10,300 out the door", and the customer bails and goes to the dealer that advertises $9,999* (plus freight, prep, doc fees, tax, etc.). I can't tell you how many customer's I've seen that have bought a bike that ended up costing them hundreds, if not thousands over retail because they didn't read the fine print.
People shop the fuck out of dealers, and then go to whoever offers the lowest price, often without considering the service they will recieve in the future. This forces the business to do what works, even if it is a shady bait and switch deal.

Easiest car purchase I've made was with Matt at Varsity. I've been nothing but impressed with Varsity Ford.

i contacted the state as well as state senators and state reps and noone ever got back to me.i think its because the auto industry is big in mich and the legislators don't want to mess with their donors for political campaigns.so they can get away with it.politicians work only for the interest of those giving them money.

Logical....... except auto manufacturers don't own (can't legally) and don't control dealerships.

I've had most of my work in MI done at Jerome-Duncan Ford (now Suburban Ford) even if I've bought the car or truck elsewhere. It can actually be harder to find a good service department than a salesman (if you know what you are doing). I got great deals from Roy O'Brien Ford ('86 Escort GT) and Al Long Ford ('89 Taurus SHO). The SHO never saw the inside of Al Long's service department.

I never bought a car from J-D because their prices were so high. But the service department had nights they were open late, their rate was $10 less than most, and the work was done right the first time.

I'm sure the salesmen you bought those from are either dead or retired. Good thing they didn't count on your future business

when i bought my 02 mustang from jerome duncan in 2002,the trans , tr3650 was jumping out of gear and there even was a service bulletin for fixing it and jerome duncan service mgr overrode the write up guy that took the car for a ride and said the trans was normal and wouldn't perform the work per the service bulletin.i'll never buy from there again.
