Who is running ATT DSL with Windows 7?

Is there a trick to making this work? Keeps giving errors 651 or 711. The modem from att is a wireless router/modem. I was able to get into the setup for att via safemode, and it says for internet "Connected." All green lights for the modem are turned on.

It worked OK when the system was running uverse, then switched to regular DSL and it has not worked. ATT told this person that it was his computer, so I put windows 7 on it (didn't know the background) and it still doesn't work. Once again, they're saying it's his computer.

Anybody know a fix?

BTW, I even went into the att setup in safemode and enabled the wireless. I was able to detect it on both the computer and my friend and my friend's phone, and we were able to connect, but we were not able to get internet.

I think AT&T makes it mandatory to be a gigantic pain in the ass to connect when they first set it up.

I just setup a friends att dsl and his 8 yr old toshiba wasn't fast enough so I had to use my D630 (thanks stalker aka Ryan) and finished the install. After that it runs on there laptop just fine.

Don't use their setup CD. Call them on your phone and get your login information setup, and just put that into the modem yourself. I had an old piece of junk 2WIRE so I bought a Netgear DSL modem with wifi built-in.

Apparently it will not work with windows 7. It works fine on xp but it worked on neither my 7 laptop or the 7 desktop. We tried everything with the modem settings and it showed "connected."

ATT came out and was there for hours and told him "It's your computer, everything is fine on our end."

I find that unacceptable. If they were to have left my house and said "Something is wrong with your computer." I'd have told them to pack their sh!t and take it with them. How this guy put up with it for 3 weeks is beyond me.

I tried for hours to make windows 7 work with this setup and it just will not. xp works fine, wireless and hardwired. It's very strange, but a quick google search showed that it's very common with att/dsl.

He's canceling DSL and having brighthouse installed asap.

I had no problem setting up the wireless with the DSL...and I'm far from computer smart?

I have whatever the fastest DSL is that they provide. Isn't Uverse just the name they give to the bundle packages now?

They have many different services... He had one of the slower available ones. I think it was like 784kbps or something. Google it, you will find many people with the same problem and no fix.

1.) I hate 2WIRE
2.) That said, Windows version should have no effect on whether it works or not. As mentioned, throw out their setup CD and use manual settings. If you don't know how to do this, tell the AT&T tech to do this (and if he won't, request a new tech) or pay someone who knows what they're doing. Unless the router is somehow messed up (unlikely, but see #1), someone is doing something wrong at some point in the chain.

edit:
so I put windows 7 on it (didn't know the background) and it still doesn't work.

So you're saying it didn't work with a previous version of Windows on the same computer? Again, this is not related to OS version. Something in the chain is screwed up and a good tech would be able to figure out where in the chain the problem is.

I didn't use their setup CD at all. Even when in the router it showed everything was fine, and XP could connect to it wirelessly and hardwired. I could not access it with my windows 7 laptop or his Windows 7 desktop.

As I said, do a google search. For this specific ATT service, and from what I read other DSL services which are similar, it does have a conflict with windows 7 and Vista.

From those errors it looks like it is a problem with PPPoE. This should be handled by the modem/router, not the PC.

As much as I hate 2WIRE modem/routers, they shouldn't be having this problem. It is a 2WIRE modem/router, correct?

It was a vista machine and when he downgraded it stopped working and never worked again. His son in law is my friend and said "I need you to wipe pete's computer" i didn't know it was an internet issue. I just thought he wanted the new OS and a clean swipe.

Yeah it's a 2wire moden/wireless router.

This is somewhat similar to what I was experiencing.

There has to be some way to get it to work but I just couldn't figure it out. My uncle is an expert tech and he tried getting into the router from his home but he couldn't and when I went into the router there was no way to turn on remote access. He could ping the IP address. I could ping out but didn't get a response back.

Can you get a screenshot of when the computer gives you the error message?

Are we beating a dead horse since you said he's switching to Brighthouse? Does he want someone to come take a look at it?

The Windows PPoE settings don't matter if the modem is doing the connection.

Yeah that's what I'm trying to wrap my head around in all of this, why is Windows even getting the chance to report a PPPoE error. Something must be very messed up in the settings in either the router or the PC.
