what would cause timing to bounce around on the balancer?

been chasing a misfire forever in my 65 mustang with a 302HO motor. initial timing is set at 18* but when I go to check the total it starts jumping around like crazy between 30* and 40* on the balancer. Its a msd pro billet dist with a msd 6al box and msd blaster coil.

first, old balancer with worn out rubber?

second, ive found it really difficult to check accurate total timing on some cars with just a timing light. are you using a dial back light?

third, still gotta ask...wanna sell it?? hah

balancer is new.

well as soon as I get it running properly I probably will list it up for sale. Its a sweet car, fastback, built 302HO, t5 swapped in, 9" rearend, weld prostars, skinnies up front, and lots of other goodies....its a clean ass car.

are you connecting the light to number one or direct to the battery?
the positive and negative from the timing light go to the battery. I then clip on the timing light around the #1 wire 1/2 way between the dist cap and plug

well i've never had problems using this timing light on the many cars i've used it on. Something is real fishy with this motor and i'm not sure whats going on.

Excessive chain play or a worn distributor gear or excessive shaft end play or to much cam thrust.

I had a brand new gear drive do that. Took it out(after making sure it was setup correctly) and replaced with a chain and all was good.
