what combo to go with

My friend has a stock 88gt vert and is looking to throw some goodies in there. Stock 5.0/stock trans, not looking for anything crazy. Maybe just a decent lumpy cam, headers, cai, stall. As for the trans Idk if its worth building the stock unit or look for one mild built, he has a budget of 1500. I'm sure he can get a nice setup for about that. Just I have no idea what is decent for a 5.0, anyone have some parts laying around they wanna sell pm me. Again this will be just driver, but he loves lopey sound.
 
A cam won't be worth the trouble on a stock 5.0 just for the sound. Not worth the time or cost, and will more than likely slow down a stock headed 302. Best bang for the buck, this is what I'd do:

-3.73 or 4.10 gear
-A good higher stall converter and trans cooler
-1.72 Roller Rockers
-Aftermarket 1 5/8" headers, Shorty's or Long tube
-H or X Pipe
-Mufflers of choice, preferably non chambered
-Have the lower intake ported

$1500 won't get you far, but should be able to get that list done. I would do it in that order as well.
 
id try to do above list and keep an eye open for keep gt40 heads to throw on with that, 12 second fun car with those heads and a b/e ford racing cheapo cam

I'd do what he says except I would suggest 4.10 over 3.73 and I would suggest 3200 stall converter lock up. Also rather than lower intake ported just find a cheap gt40 style intake.
 
I'm clueless to the mustangs 5.0, and trans. Blower is always a plus, Idk if he wants to go that rout. I'm sure he wouldn't mind it, just how long would the trans hold
 
4.10 gears and a stall will make the biggest difference. Trans will be fine just never beat on it in OD. My stock trans was in pretty good shape running TFS heads, e303 cam cobra intake and a 150 shot.
Personally I'd put a 4.10 gear in it get a nice 3200 stall converter try to find a used converter. Only bummer part is its an 88 so I doubt it has mass air on it :( if you put a cam in it it will run like crap. Pretty sure they don't even run that well with heads and an intake on em.

Without it being mass air my list would be
4.10 gear
Converter
headers, h pipe and mufflers
Save for a 351W and mass air setup :D
