Wear your helmets out on the bikes, please =-['

I was sad to hear of this horrible accident earlier today.

I'm sorry to hear the car driver is your Uncle, God bless &
comfort all involved in this terrible event.

Very sad, for driver involved, and family of biker for sure. Thank You. :icon_cry:

A helmet may have made things much worse.
Not wearing a helmet is a strategy, not an oversight.

Motorcycle fatalities are up 26% overall since they repealed the helmet law. In 2011, the last year of the mandatory helmet law... 5 of 109 fatalities that year were riders without helmets. Last year, out of 138 fatalities 56 of them were not wearing a helmet.

Arguing that riding a motorcycle without a helmet is somehow safer is literally the stupidest thing ever on this board... and I take into account every car/football/basketball/police/pitbull/election/celebrity/etc debate we've ever had.

It's not a strategy, it's a choice. I don't disagree with your freedom to choose, but don't sully it with the "but I can see better so it's safer" stupidity. They make plenty of helmets that don't obstruct your vision or hearing at all... and, while not as safe as full faces helmets, they are still exponentially safer than not wearing one at all

Here's four separate articles detailing the statistics of Michigan's soaring injury and fatality rates since the helmet law was repealed.

I love statistic based articles like this. For example the Detroit News article says:

In 2011, the year before the repeal, five of the 109 motorcyclists who were killed in crashes were not wearing a helmet, according to the state police. Last year, 56 of the 138 riders were killed were not wearing helmets.

So in 2011, 104 helmeted riders died. In 2016 only 82 helmeted riders died. So I can say that statistically, safety of helmeted riders improves by 20% when people are allowed to ride without helmets. Sounds like a win-win! Let them that ride decide.

Seriosuly though, you have a 2-3% better chance of survival when wearing a helmet. If you are one of those 2-3%, though, bet you wish you had that helmet on!

Remember these are fatalities noted here, not catastrophic injury's,
which helmets are extremely helpful.

I worked as a Firefighter at one time, no one has to convince me
how much better it is to wear a helmet or a seatbelt.

May have been a "knee jerk" reaction on my part due to the circumstances. But...... It's March, others aren't looking for you out on the roads yet. It was 6PM, dusk/dark? older rider........ probably first few times out this year so far.

Middle of summer, you've been out alot, others are aware bikes are out there, take it off, I'm cool with it

My thoughts on the subject, be safe out there, I hate hearing about riders and outcomes like this. Have a safe ride and come home at the end of it.:gr_patrio

Bugs and rocks hurt
The sun and wind burn
Cement and gravel always win vs. bone and skin

Oh and i took a physics class or two. We did the "drop egg off of building" experiment... Pass me the helmet, please.

I just rented a Fatboy Harley in Vegas and all they had were little "Army man" helmets... It wasnt a good feeling. I could imagine my face dragging on cement and cactus. BTW, NOBODY rents sport bikes in las vegas anymore... my plan was to rent an S1000RR... All you can get are harleys, goldwings, enduros..

Velocity is a squared component in the Energy equation....it doesn't take an item of much mass at an elevated velocity to feel like a brick. Personal experience - I took a blackbird to the helmet (full face) once on a street bike at about 50-55 mph. Snapped my head/neck back pretty good...and part of the beak embedded itself in the shield. Can only imagine what that would've done to my head without a helmet.

I grew up in Wisconsin (no helmet law) and rode but a few times without a helmet and got sandblasted, hit by bugs, hail, rain, etc. enough to convince me that it was worth wearing if not for those reasons alone.

One time in a trail I might have been doing about 50 on my banshee and took what I thought was a Bee to the chest... Thought I got shot lol.

I agree with you. Putting up meaningless statistics isn't necessary to support a common sense decision though. That was my point.

The news media jumps on statistics and it drives me nuts. Most of the time they are fake news. For that original statistic about "number of deaths going up XX% since helmet law was passed", it would only mean anything if it said "death rates due to head trauma go up".

I've had that feeling. I took a rock to the chest on I75 and I had to de-glove to feel that my skin was still intact. I thought, did I just get sniped from an overpass?!?! Turns out no...im just a wuss that cant take a rock/asteroid (it was probably a space spawned asteroid!!!!) impact.

Bugs hurt.

I took a dragonfly to the chest at 80 on my R6. It felt like someone punched me in the chest.

I'd run a mile down to 7-11 with no helmet, or in my neighborhood.... But I've heard way to much stuff hit my helmet in my limited riding experience to not wear on the street.

You know what's kinda funny.....

I see old men on Harley's without helmets, I see a lot of younger guys geared up! It's kinda rare I see dudes on sportbikes with shorts and flip flops anymore..

What do you think the fatalities are from? Because I'd bet a lot of money that the majority of them are due to head trauma. Nobody's dying because they broke their collarbone...

but if you want to be a turd and argue justs to argue... there's plenty of evidence to support what anybody with common sense understands already

Ask the anti-helmet crowd to go step out onto the football field and play some wide receiver for a full season. No helmet. Surely it's safer because you can see and hear the defenders better, right?

Because everyone has a GoPro stuck to their helmet.

North Carolina gym shorts, a wife beater and flip flops were definitely a common sight 15 years ago.
