Venture van transmission trouble

Have a 2003 venture van with about 80K on it, the transmission will only work in reverse & either 1st or 2nd gear, for sure it's not working in third or 4th. It is real slow to pull away from the stoplight, as though it's in 2nd gear. No trouble code showed up on the dashboard.

So, it does not move forward at all in 3 or od? or does it move forward, but does not take off in 1st gear?
Does the vehicle not move at all in reverse? When in R, can you rev the engine like its in Neutral, or does the engine have a load on it like its in gear?

It moves forward in 3rd & OD, but the engine is racing and the transmission doesn't downshift when I drop to either 3rd or 2nd. And it starts slowly from a dead stop.
Reverse works fine.

Sounds like your describing like the transmission is taking off in 3rd gear.
To diaginosis it properly you would need to attach a scan tool, but something you can do quickly is check all fuses, including under the hood.
If the transmission recives no power, it will take off in high gear.
No power would be a blown fuse, bad wire or bad ecm.

Solenoids do go bad...its just not a easy swap on that vehicle.
If the fluid was in good condition and you have no other codes, clear it and see if it comes right back, even before you shift it. If it does, go through the diagnostic procedure of checking for a shorted wire or shorted shift solenoid. If its a shorted solenoid, I would suggest replacing the tcc, epc, shift solenoids along with the mlps sensor, which is internal on that year vehicle. they all have high failure rates.
