Hi Guys,

Slowly starting a plan of attack for our '68 Mustang Vert. (early '90's 302 w/ AOD) Heads will be AFR 165's or 185's or DART 170's. Intake and carb still undecided. A custom hyd. cam that will be all done by 6200. Gear will be a high 3 series or possibly a 4.10. Looking for ideas on a converter....thinking of something in the 2400-2800 range but am open to ideas. The car will be a fun summer type cruiser that I am shooting for 350-375 FWHP. Thoughts??

I'd go with a 3500-4000. Converter can make all the difference. My brothers car was going 11.30's all day at Milan in 2009. Had a TCI 10" converter, "3500" stall but it was super tight. Switched to a custom 8" 5k converter and went 10.80's without changing anything else.

Whoops I meant 8" 4800 stall, he was shifting at 6500 rpms as well. Now its a 5200 stall converter but the car is shifted around 7200rpms.

Even a daily driver I would do a 4000. I've driven a 5000 stall, 4500 stall, and a 3000 stall all behind my last engine. The 4500 worked best, both on motor and on hose. The 3000 stall actually ran close to a second slower in the 1/4 mile. Don't cheap out on the maker. You get what you pay for. Driveability, performance, and even safety.

I like Vigilante converters myself, from Precision Industries. Their Ford converters are called Stallions. Shoot for 4000 rpm and you will smile when you mash the gas.

Go to this website, fill out the form with all of the specs you know, and email it to Lenny. He will set you up with the correct convertor for your combo. But I would agree with Detroit Gearbox, and say 2800-3200 for a street cruiser. And with an AOD I would surely go for the 4.10's if it was me. A higher stall would most likely make it a little faster at the track, but I would say it will definitley just make alot more heat on the street. Doesnt sound lke any sort of strip car to me, more a cruiser. And we know heat kills tansmissions! I would probably got for a lock-up myself, but I would ask the pro what he reccomends.

Good Luck!

Bottom line is this. If the cam duration isn't bigger that 238 at .050, anything more than 3000 to 3400 will be a massive waste of time. You'll want non lock up, or you'll hate the 3-4 shift chuggle.

I was going to call Lenny before we did anything...he re-stalled a conmverter for us on the race car a few yrs ago and we dropped 3/10ths just from it--admittly it was a badly matched converter but still, Lenny knows his stuff!!

Yep, if we buy off the shelf I would not pick anything bigger than 3200

Run a TCI at 5500 stall in the race car and am happy with.....I need to look at PI then.
