TKO 5 speed vs T-5

My consern is what is the difference between a tko and a t-5.A performance tranny shop quoted me $750 to build my t-5 hold up to 500hp.It will have all hardened gears some type syncrows and carbon fiber gaskets.

Different transmissions entirely. TKO has a larger center distance than the T5 and that allows a higher torque capacity by allowing beefier gears. Read all about it on Tremec's website.

Typical T5 upgrades are a billet steel input shaft bearing retainer, and carbon fiber synchro material. The Input shaft bearing retainer helps improve torque capacity, and the synchros help with shift capability and are more durable than the brass synchros the T5's originally came with.

All that said, the TKO is the better foundation for high torque applications compared to the T5. FWIW, T5's can take more power than they are rated for, but power shifting or hard launches with sticky tires are where they don't keep up.

If you have or anticipate 500 horse, save up for the Tremec. If you only have $750, do the T5 and don't powershift it!!

It only gonna be 500 on spray high 300 on motor spray not gonna be used except at track couple times a year.

The trimec major rebuild kit cost 250+.... 2.95 gear set runs about 500 for trimec parts/400 for aftermarket.
Make sure you know "exactly" what your getting for your money.

I had a Tremec in my capri years ago. I was running a N/A 294ci iron headed motor. Needless to say, it made very little torque and just under 420hp to the wheels. Had nothing but issues. The transmission spent more time at liberty's gears than in my car. Broken shift forks, exploded gears, twisted input shafts etc. They are heavy too. Alot of my troubles were clutch related though (way to much base pressure). They do make some strong aftermarket T-5 internals now-a-days. With an adjustable pressure plate, I would bet the beefed up T-5 will work just fine for you. You really should run an adjustable plate regardless of transmission choice. Also, definitely use a shifter with adjustable stops.

do a goggle search on how many people have a had time getting the TKO to shift from second to third
