COP: Do you realize you ran a red light?
ME: When the light was changing, I didn't feel I was able to stop my car in a safe manor as required by law. It was my duty according to state statute to go thru if I couldn't stop in a safe manor.
COP: That's because you were speeding.
ME: When I realized I wasn't going to be able to stop at the light, I reapplied the gas so that I could get thru the intersection before cars started entering the intersection. But I never went over the speed limit, otherwise you would have pulled me over for speeding. (It is illegal for a car to enter the intersection, even on green, until all cross traffic has cleared).
COP: Mumble, mumble, mumble...(checks for any outstanding warrants and hand me my license, insurance and registration) Mumble, mumble, mumble...drive safely....(and no ticket).
If you didn't feel it was safe to stop at the intersection, you are actually required to continue thru the intersection in a safe monor. The above discussion was between me and a St. Clair Shores cop after I went thru the intersection at 11 Mile Rd and Little Mack. I've been pulled over three times for running a light (including a camera light in Toledo) and either wasn't written, or in the case of Toledo, I had the ticket thrown out.
