Ticket for Slicks on the Street?

My buddy got a set of slicks from another friend that still have some life left in them and he's thinking about rolling around town on them. I could have swore I've seen somewhere where some people have been popped for running a "non-DOT approved tire" and getting a ticket, but I can't find anything like that. Anyone had any run-ins where the cops hassled you about running on slicks on the street?

I ran around on them for years and never had problems. Even the DOT approved slicks like the Hoosier QTP's are illegal due to low tread depth so don't think they'd legal just cause they are "DOT Approved"

X2. Its up to your buddy whether its worth the hassle of possibly getting flicked.

Yes, they are illegal....but many of us have run them for years. DOT is part of it, tread depth is the other on the QTP and ET Streets.
Some cities have ordinances and will IMPOUND the car, not just a ticket. Just keep that in mind before heading out.

since 2003 I have driven on the street with either the hoosier QTP's, ET street's, or now the hoosier radials (not legal for highway use). I have never once had an issue. However, I do drive conservatively and try to stay on my best behavior.

I ran them on my car on the street all the time. I got a ticket for them only once. Was initially pulled over for not having a front bumper cover on the car (was troubleshooting over heating issues). The officer was about to let me go with a warning for the bumper when he noticed the gutted interior and slicks. He asked me if it was a race car... anyway after a few minutes of reconsidering letting me off he came back with a ticket for defective equipment (forgot the actual verbage). I then asked him if it was a fix it ticket and he said you'd have to go to the court and find out.

The next day I swapped to my street tires and went to the court. The court said they were unsure since the officer did not indicate on the ticket "write off" (or something to that effect). The court assistant then sent me to the police department to have one of the officers check the vehicle had proper tires and sign off on the ticket. The officer at the desk said I'd have to go back to the court because they were unsure about signing off on the ticket and the court assistant would be able to determine if its a write off. The officer also said that if it was indeed a write off that I could find any court officer to sign off on the ticket.

So back at the court I told the desk assistant what the officer at the police station had told me and she consulted with another court assistant only to say that they were still unsure if it was a "fix it ticket" and that I could see a magistrate. So the magistrate had an opening right before lunch and I quickly rushed down to the court room. At this point I was rather nervous since I was not dressed appropriatly for court (had no idea I'd be seeing a magistrate that day). After 45mins of waiting the magistrate asked what the ticket was about and I explained my story. He dropped the ticket after I explained that I now had the proper tires.

Moral of the story. If you run slicks on the street be prepared for fix-it ticket; if you want to "fix" the ticket be prepared for a long process. I'm not sure of how much $$$ the actual ticket would have been for. After it was all said and done I had sunk a few hours into getting the ticket dropped. Btw I still drive slicks on the street even after this fiasco

My friend got pulled over yesterday in Livonia in his car. First real test drive, he had expired plates, no hood and slicks. The cop didn't like the slicks but let him go with only a ticket for expired plates.

I used to work in a tire shop in Roseville and it was hit or miss. People would get popped all of the time on the weekends. I was constantly swapping tires out for people. Just get a seond set of rims for the street and keep the slicks for the track. Chances are, if you "NEED" slicks on the street, you are getting ready to race and about to have bigger worries anyway

Back in the mid-90s I got pulled over for this at 8 mile/mound (known street racing area at the time) late at night. Cop threatened to impound the car but just ended up giving me a $60 ticket. Never had a problem before or afterward.

Ive been stopped on slicks once and the cop was more concerned about my tint than anything. Didn't say a word about the slicks or no wipers or anything, just a tint ticket. What a moron.

If the cops would worry more about answering 911 calls and other real crimes we would live in a much safer society.
Harassing someone for slicks on a nice day just cruising around, window tint, and any other stuff that does not bother anybody else around is childish on the cops part. It tells me that that cop is nothing and usless to the police department for wasting time.
