So i bought a new car and have my old car in the street that i have for sale. Took the plate from my old car and registered it to my new car. The car in the street didn't have a plate, so i put the plate from my mustang on there until it sold( have not renewed mustang plate this year yet) . Today i came home to a ticket for Expired License Plate ticket and improper plate on vehicle. What are my options here? Is it legal to park in the driveway if it is not registered?

Your lucky they didn't Impound the car. You absolutely can not park a car on a public right of way w/o plates and insurance. Also in most cities if the vehicle is parked in a place that is visible from off your property it must have current plates.

You are very fortunate, that car didn't get towed.
Yes, it is correct, you were MUCH better off NOT putting
the Mustang (wrong plate) on the car. You bumped your
offense up to a misdemeanor for doing so most likely.

I'm not sure if actually not driving the car at the time will make
any difference in the fine / charge. It all depends on how it was
written up. You'll know soon enough when you go to settle this
matter.

I am a little surprised you didn't know you can't park a
car with an expired plate / no plate / wrong plate on a
public street.

Nevertheless, It'll get worked out.

I knew legally i couldn't park it in the street without proper plates, especially one that doesn't match and not even current. But what i didn't see coming was a cop to actually driving down my street, and then checking to make sure a random car has the proper plate / registration. I called the police dept, and they said just don't park it on uncle sams streets, but driveway is fine, and to make a court date and just explain what happened.

a lot of cars are now equipped with automatic license plate reading cameras, and the software then runs the plate, if probably popped up on his screen halfway down the next block that it scanned an expired plate, then he came back and saw it on a different vehicle

Did you change plates in plain site? It's awfully coincidental that you changed the plates and shortly after you are ticketed. You have neighbor issues? Had a situation in the past where someone called on a vehicle that just so happened to swap the plates the day a complaint was sent in. The swapped plate was legal for the vehicle in advance and not just a physical swap. Quickly found out who the complainer was right after that.

Go to the SOS and get at temporary paper plate.. Make sure to leave insurance on the car.

The 30-day permit fee is 1/10 the annual registration fee or $20, whichever is greater, plus a $10 service fee.

The 60-day permit fee is 1/5 the annual registration fee or $40, whichever is greater, plus a $10 service fee.
